1. حمامٌ بأعلى الجَلْهَتَينِ ينوحُ

    أهيمُ به شجواً ولستُ أبوحُ

    A dove coos sorrowfully atop the sand dunes

    I wander about in longing though I do not confess

  2. يذكَّرني الأحبابَ بيني وبينهمْ

    فدافدُ تتلوها مهامِهُ فيحُ

    It reminds me of loved ones, between me and them

    Its cooing repeats their abandonment so it wails

  3. فيُقلِقُني تحتَ الدُّجُنَّةِ سجعُها

    فأغدو على وجدي بهمْ وأروحُ

    So it disquiets me beneath the little dunes

    And I become when longing for them restless

  4. اِذا ما تذكَّرتُ الأحبَّةَ باللَّوى

    تساقطَ دمعٌ لا يَغُبُّ سفوحُ

    Whenever I remember the loved ones in al-Liwa

    Tears fall incessantly down the cheeks

  5. أفي كلَّ يومٍ لي إلى عرصاتِه

    وقد فارقوه غُربةٌ ونُزوحُ

    Is there for me every day to its watering places

    While they left it in strangerhood and departure

  6. وفي كلَّ يومٍ لي على الرسمِ مدمعٌ

    تَورَّدَ حتى خِيلَ فيه ذبيحُ

    And is there for me in every day tears on the ruins

    That gushed until it seemed blood in it poured

  7. أحِنُّ إلى برقِ الثغورِ إذا بدا

    لنا بارقٌ بالأجرَعَينِ لموحُ

    I yearn for the lightening of the frontiers when it appears

    A lightening for us below the darkness gleams

  8. ملاعبٌ أمّا منذ بانَ قطينُها

    فطرفي غريقٌ بالدموعِ قريحُ

    Places of joy but since their felicity departed

    My eyes are drowned in tears, wounded

  9. مرابعُ أبلاها الزمانُ وتربُها

    يضوعُ ذكاءً نشرُه ويفوحُ

    Dwellings that time has destroyed and its soil

    Lays waste, its blooming being wide and redolent

  10. سقتْهُ شآبيبُ السحابِ فاِنْ وَنَى

    سقاهُ هتونٌ للدموعِ دلوحُ

    The clouds' drizzles watered it but if it withers

    A bucket of tears its water-skin, dripping, will give it to drink

  11. خليليَّ ما بالي أُليحُ إذا بَدَتْ

    بروقٌ لنا تحتَ الظلامِ تلوحُ

    My friend why, when lightenings for us beneath the darkness appear

    Does the gleam incite me, so I complain of

  12. يُهيَّجُني منها الوميضُ فأشتكي

    غرامي وشكوى العاشقينَ فَضُوحُ

    My passion and the lovers' plain unveilings

    If the absenting of the frequenter in al-Liwa is prolonged

  13. لئن طالَ عهدُ الحاجبيَّةِ باللَّوى

    فما الموتُ إلا للمحبَّ مريحُ

    Death is but rest for the lover

    And the most painful of that which the enamoured hopes for

  14. وأصعبُ ما يُمنَى به الصبُّ في الهوى

    عذولٌ على أحبابِه ونصيحُ

    Is to be deprived of his loved ones and well-wishers

    Gently, with the distance between us so prolonged, for as long

  15. رويداً على مضنًى من البينِ طالما

    تساوى سقيمٌ عندَه وصحيحُ

    A sick man and a healthy man are equal to him

    He has, after the loves, a heedless eye

  16. له ناظراٌ بعدَ الحبائبِ جفنُهُ

    همولٌ وقلبٌ للفراقِ جريحُ

    And a heart for separation wounded

    Lying prostrate on the ruins after the encampment there

  17. طريحٌ على الأطلالِ مِن بعدِ ما انتوتْ

    بهنَّ نوًى تُنضي النِياقَ طَروحُ

    Its felicity the camel litters removed

    Will the places convey unto me, and the desolate region Uyunam

  18. فهل تُبْلِغَنَّي الربعَ وجناءُ عيهَمٌ

    يُهيَّمُها رِمثٌ هناكَ وشِيجُ

    Which roams there ashes and brambles

    It inclines to the acacia trees of Udhayb when it turns

  19. تُغِضُّ إلى طَلْحِ العُذَيبِ إذا انثنى

    مِنَ السيرِ عنه رازحٌ وطليحُ

    Aside from travelling, downcast and complaining

    And I see those tents as though, when they appear

  20. وأنظرُ هاتيكَ الخيامَ كأنَّها

    إذا ما بدتْ دونَ الطلوحِ طلوحُ

    Below the sand-heap, the sand-heap

    Tents that show me the portion, if I visited their people

  21. خياماً تُريني الحظَّ أن زرتُ أهلَها

    بُعيدَ النوى فيهنَّ وهو ربيحُ

    Far from longing among them, and it is vast

    Alas that time will not be generous with their nearness

  22. وهيهاتَ أن يسخو الزمانُ بقربهمْ

    وما زالَ بالأحبابِ وهو شحيحُ

    And it still with loved ones stingy remains

    Our loved ones, my brothers, as you know

  23. أحبَّتنَا وُدَّي كما قد علمتُمُ

    سليمُ أَواخيَّ الوفاءِ صريحُ

    Loyal, true to the covenant, resolute

    Trustworthy, if kindred pulls his sympathy

  24. أمينٌ إذا السُّلوانُ جاذبَ عِطفَهُ

    فليس له نحوَ السُّلُوَّ جُنُوحُ

    He has no inclination to kindred, no leaning

    Faithful, when the resolves of a people go astray

  25. وفيٌّ متى خارتْ عزائمُ معشَرٍ

    بدا في ظلامِ الغدرِ منه وُضُوحُ

    His light appears in the darkness of betrayal shining

    The garden never showed in the thickets a finery

  26. وما الروضُ أبدى في الحدائقِ حليةً

    تدبَّجَ غِبَّ القَطرِ فهوَ نفوحُ

    Adorned that the dripping of rain equals it diffusing

    The breeze wanders in its corners as though for it

  27. سرى في نواحيها النسيمُ كأنَّهُ

    لها بينَ أزهارِ الخمائلِ روحُ

    Among the chamomile's flowers a spirit

    In the fairest sight, O night, whenever

  28. بأحسنَ مرأىً منكِ يا ليلُ كلمَّا

    بدا لكِ وجهٌ كالصباحِ صبيحُ

    A face like the dawn, smiling, appears to you

    Looking at me from it, solace and delight

  29. يطالِعُني منه رُواءٌ وبهجةٌ

    كما طالعتْ أهلَ البسيطةِ يوحُ

    As the people of al-Basita, revelation, looked upon

    So I come when I intend describing a wondrous one

  30. فأغدو متى ما رمتُ وصفَ بديعةٍ

    وقد خانني حمدٌ له ومديحُ

    And praising it has betrayed me, and panegyric

    So speak to me, O neighbour, of your life, what is it

  31. فيا حارِ حَدَّثني بعيشكَ ما الذي

    أجرَّ لسانَ الشَّعرِ وهو فصيحُ

    That inspired the eloquent tongue of poetry, articulate

    Is it from the excess of that beauty I feared reverently

  32. أمِنْ فرطِ ذاكَ الحسنِ أشفقتُ هيبةً

    فأمسيتُ مِن نظمِ القريضِ أُليحُ

    And became from composing verse incapable

    These poems are but laments

  33. وما هذه الأشعارُ إلا منائحٌ

    اِذا ما أردنا وصفَها وفُتُوحُ

    When we want to describe them, and clear poems
