1. قد حُقَّ للمشتاقِ أن يتوجَّعا

    ولعينهِ بعدَ النوى أن تَدْمَعا

    It is right for the longing one to be in anguish

    And for his eyes after sleep to shed tears

  2. رحلَ الأحبَّةَ عن ملاعبِ لَعْلَعٍ

    فهجرتُ مِنْ بعدِ الأحبَّةِ لَعْلَعا

    The loved ones left the playgrounds of Lal'la

    So I deserted Lal'la after the loved ones

  3. أفلوا فلم أرَ للأهلَّةِ بعدَما

    أفلوا ولا لسرورِ عينيَ مَطلعا

    They departed, so I did not see any new moon after they left

    Nor any joy for my eye rising

  4. والدارُ بالأحبابِ ولا سقىَّ الحيا

    دارَ الأحبَّةِ بعدَهنَّ ولا رَعَى

    The abode with loved ones is not watered, nor does it pasture

    The abode of loved ones after them, nor does it nurture

  5. مالي وللأطلالِ أَنْدُبُ ما عَفا

    منها وأذكرُ ملعباً أو مَرْبعا

    What is it to me to mourn what has vanished

    Of it, and I remember a playground or an enclosure

  6. قد كنتُ استسقي لساكنِ ربعِها

    دمعي إذا ما الغيثُ ضنَّ فأقلعا

    I used to beg my tears when the rain was stingy

    To stop, then pour forth generously

  7. أيامَ كانت للكواعبِ مألَفاً

    يزهو بهنَّ وللجآذرِ مَرْتعا

    Days when the gazelles were intimate with it

    Taking delight in them, and for the wild cows, a pasture

  8. يا منزلاً لعِبَ الزمانُ بأهلهِ

    وأعادَه الحَدَثانُ قَفْراً بَلْقعا

    O dwelling where time played with its people

    And events returned it to desolation and abandonment

  9. ما كنتُ أبخَلَ أن تجودَكَ ادمعي

    دَفْقاً إذا المزنُ الهتونُ تقشَّعا

    I did not begrudge shedding my tears there

    Profusely when the clouds were in fine drizzle

  10. لكنَّها نضبتْ وأنفدَ ماءَها

    خوفي على شملِ الهوى أن يُصْدَعا

    But they are exhausted, and their water depleted

    Fearing for the unity of love that it will split

  11. وحمامةٍ سجعتْ على فَنَنِ النقا

    لمّا اكتسى زَهْرَ الربيعِ وأينَعا

    And a dove moaned on the branches of Naqaa

    When the blossoms of spring were adorned and flourished

  12. ناحتْ على اعلى الغصونِ ومائد

    الأغصانِ يَحمِلُها على أن تَسْجَعا

    She moaned atop the highest branches, unable to endure

    The branches bearing her, urging her to moan

  13. دعتِ الهديلَ فباتَ وهو منعَّمٌ

    بدنوَّهِ منها وبتُّ مروَّعا

    She called to the softly blowing morning breeze and it stayed

    Charmed by her nearness, while I stayed fearful

  14. أشبهتُها دمعي في النوحِ إلا أنَّها

    ناحتْ ونحتُ تطرَّباً وتفجُّعا

    I likened her to my tears in lament, except

    She moaned while I moaned agitated and anguished

  15. وسكبتُ دمعي في الديارِ وقد نأى

    عنها الخليطُ مقوَّضاً ومودَّعا

    And I poured my tears in the dwellings after

    The beloved band had withdrawn, bidden farewell

  16. حتى كأنَّ عليَّ ضربةَ لازبٍ

    في كلَّ رسمٍ أن أَسُحَّ الأدمُعا

    As if, with every vestige, I was dealt the blow of parting

    To smooth away the tears continually

  17. وتنوفةٍ كلفَّتُ نجبي قطعَها

    لمّا نأى عنَّي الفريقُ وأزمعا

    And the wails I tasked my throat to voice

    When the companions went far and intended departure

  18. جاوزتُها بايانِقٍ تَطِسُ الحصى

    أخفافُهنَّ على الوَجا واليَرْمَعا

    I passed them by with howdahs swaying, treading the pebbles

    Their trot upon the sands and gravel

  19. وسرتْ وهنَّ إلى المواردِ ولَّهٌ

    في القفرِ تكرعُ مِن صداها اليَلْمَعا

    They went to the watering places, stumbling

    In the wilderness, gulping the mirages gleaming

  20. خالتْ وقد خدعَ السرابُ عيونَها

    وَسَطَ النهارِ بأنَّ فيه مَكْرَعا

    They were deluded, the mirage deceiving their eyes

    Amidst the daylight that it held a pasture

  21. تبغي إذا ما الآلُ عبَّ عُبابَهُ

    يا ويحَها ممّا يُرقرِقُ مَشرَعا

    Seeking, when the herds bellow their call

    Alas for them from what casts its shadows, a ruin

  22. هيهاتَ أن تَرِدَ المشاربَ عذبةً

    مِن بَعْدِ ما نزلَ الخليطُ الأجرَعا

    Far-fetched that the watering places will flow sweet

    After the bitter herds have descended

  23. أو أن تعودَ لها الخمائلُ غضةً

    ترعى بهِ الروضَ الأريضَ المُمْرِعا

    Or that the tender meadows will return, green

    Where they grazed, the fertile soft enclosures

  24. حتى أرى الحيَّ البعيدَ وقد دنا

    منَّي وأنفُ البينِ يُلْفَى اجدَعا

    Until I see the living beloved who went far

    Draw near me, and the chasm of separation mended

  25. أَأُلامُ مِن بعدِ الحبائب أنَّني

    أدَعُ النجائبَ في الأزمَّةِ خُضَّعا

    Shall I be blamed, after the loved ones, that

    I let the wails in distress subside?

  26. ترمي الفدافدَ بي وهنَّ سواهمٌ

    هِيمٌ حَكَيْنَ مِنَ الهُزالِ الأنسُعا

    The emaciated beasts pelt me while they are fat

    Wandering, recounting my wasting decline

  27. خوصُ العيونِ تبدَّلتْ مِن بعدِما

    لانَ المُناخُ لها مُناخاً جَعْجَعا

    The eyes' darkened hue changed after

    The climate turned for them diseased and murky

  28. أحتثُّها تحتَ الظلامِ طلائحاً

    عُجْفاً إذا شِمْتُ البروقَ اللمَّعا

    I rouse them in the darkness, wandering blindly

    Blinking if I smell the sudden lightning flash

  29. واِذا الرياحُ سرتْ بِرَيّا زينبٍ

    نحوي وسفتُ عبيرَه المتضوَّعا

    And if the winds blow the scent of Rayya Zainab

    To me, I inhale its lingering fragrance

  30. وتناوحتْ أنفاسُها وتأرَّجتْ

    طيباً طويتُ على الغرامِ الأضلُعا

    Her breaths heaved, and sweetly scented

    My ribs, lovesick, were tightly confined

  31. والحُرُّ تَمَن كنتمَ الهوى وحديثَهُ

    حَذَراً عليه وخفيةً أن يُسمعا

    While my passion and its tale were hidden

    Warily, secretly, lest it be heard

  32. والوجدُ ما منعَ الجفونَ أليُمهُ

    في القربِِ أوفي البعدِ مِن أن تَهحعا

    And anguish, severe in nearness or distance

    Did not prevent the eyelids from streaming

  33. يا عاذليَّ على المحبةِكَرِّرا

    عَذْلي إذا ما شِئتماهُ أو دَعا

    O you who blame me for my love - reproach me

    For my fault if you wish, or let be

  34. فلقد أجابَ الحبَّ مني طائعاً

    قلبٌ تسرَّعَ نحوَه لمّا دَعا

    For an obedient heart hastened to answer

    Love's call when it called to me

  35. لا تحسبا أن الملامةَ في الهوى

    كثَني فؤاداً با لصبابةِ مولَعا

    Think not the blame in love is due

    To the ardour of my smitten heart

  36. صَغُرَ الملامُ بأنْ يَكُفِّ متيَّماً

    عَرَفَ الوِصالَ وطيبَهُ أويمنَعا

    Small is the blame if it stops a love-sick one

    Who knew union and its sweetness, or denies

  37. يرتاحُ أن هبَّتْ صَباً أو أَرْزَمَتْ

    هوجاءُ أو ناحَ الحمامُ مرجِّعا

    He finds peace if the morning shone or lightning flashed

    Or the dove moaned repeating her song
