نَظَري في الصَفاءِ أَشهَدَني غَي
بي وَغَيري عَلى خِلافِ الحالِ
My gaze into the clear surface shows me another than myself—
as me, yet other than me—contrary to reality.
مِثلَ ما في المِرآةِ أَشهَدُ مِن خَل
في أَمامي وَعَن يَميني شِمالي
Just as, in the mirror, I behold what lies behind—
—me before me, and, on my right, my left.
وَهيَ لَم تَستَحِل وَلا حَلَّ فيها
ما تَبَدّى فيها مِنَ الأَشكالِ
Yet it has not changed, nor have there entered into it
any of the forms that appeared within it.
