بُليتُ بِشادِنٍ أَضحى فُؤادي
رَهينَ هَواهُ لَيسَ يُفكّ رَهنُه
I have been afflicted with a young gazelle; my heart has become
captive to love for him, its bondage unbroken.
رَمَتني مُقلَتاه فَما وَقاني
سِهامَ الحَتفِ مِن دِرعٍ وَجنّه
His two eyes shot at me, and nothing protected me
from death’s arrows—neither armor nor shield.
كَذَلِكَ قالَ خالقُنا تَعالى
جَعَلنا بَعضَكُم لِلبَعضِ فِتنَه
Thus spoke our Creator, exalted is He:
“We have made some of you a trial for others.”
