مَواعيدُهُ بِالوَصلِ أَحلامُ نائِمٍ
أُشبِّهُها بِالقَفرِ أَو بِسَرابِهِ
His promises of union are a sleeper’s dreams;
I liken them to the barren desert, or to its mirage.
فَمَن لِي بِوَجهٍ لَو تَحَيَّر في الدُجى
أَخُو سَفَرٍ في لَيلِ غَيمٍ سَرى بِهِ
Who, then, can grant me a face by whose light, if lost in the darkness,
a traveler on a cloudy night could make his way?
