Spring unsheathed keen swords against winter;
they left him wounded, without returning to their scabbards.
The cloud’s eye wept for him with tears,
while the upland hills laughed at its pouring rain.
Their anemones appeared amid their meadows,
glorying in twin robes of crimson and black,
as though together they were winter’s daughter, grieving
over his affliction like a full sister among his offspring.
Thus her red color is the dye of his lifeblood,
and the black of her attire is a garment of mourning.
