يُصَبِّرُني أَهلُ المَوَدَّةِ دائِباً
وَإِنَّ فُؤادي وَالإِلَهِ صَبورُ
The people of affection ceaselessly counsel me to be patient;
and indeed my heart—by God—is patient.
أَغارُ عَلى مَغنى الرِئاسَةِ إِنَّني
عَلى كُلِّ حُسنٍ في الزَمانِ لَغَيُّورُ
I grow jealous for the seat of sovereignty, for indeed I
am fiercely jealous of every beauty in this world.
أُصَرِّفُ ذِهني في أُمورٍ كَبيرَةٍ
وَأَعلَمُ أَنَّ الدائِراتِ تَدورُ
I turn my mind to many matters,
and know that fortune’s cycles come round.
