Chains of lightning necklace the land;
impossible that they should pour their rain on Banū Silsilah.
They water one homeland and pass all others by,
sent forth laden with life-giving rain.
Will it wash my body clean of what is upon it,
when my heart is in greater need of being washed?
Never, all my life, shall I drink a draught of wine,
while my soul lies forfeit to its deeds.
