إِرمِنا يا ظَلامُ في كُلِّ فَجٍّ
فَالمُنى لَم تَزَل تَجُرُّ المَنايا
Darkness pervades every ravine,
While death still drags down its prey.
وَحَنى بائِسٌ عَلى القُربِ جيداً
لِوَداعٍ وَالعَيسُ مِثلُ الحَنايا
A wretched bend weeping over graves once dear
Like the myrtle when parting is near.
وَدُنّا يَعَذولُ أَنّا سَلِمنا
مِن هَوانا وَلَم نُدانِ الدَنايا
“We are safe,” they insist in their flight
From vileness; they are still chained in vice.
إِنَّ جَهلاً سَلمي لِآل سُلَيمى
وَثَنائي عَلى عِذابِ الثَنايا
My safety was in thralls of ignorance,
My praise exalting the torment twice.
