إِن كانَ قَلبُكَ فيهِ خَوفُ بارِئِهِ

فَلا تُجاوِز حِذارَ اللَهِ بِالحَسَدِ

If your heart fears its Creator

Then do not let envy exceed God's boundaries

هُما نَقيضانِ لا يَستَجمِعانِ بِهِ

وَالظَبيُ غَيرُ مُقيمٌ في ذَرا الأَسَدِ

They are opposites that cannot coexist

And the gazelle does not live in the lion's den

وَالرَوحُ في حُبِّ دُنياها مُعَذَّبَةٌ

حَتّى يُقالُ لَها بِيني عَنِ الجَسَدِ

The soul tortured by its worldly love

Until it is told leave the body

ما لا تُطيقُ هَلاكٌ حينَ تَحمِلُهُ

وَالدَرُّ يَهلِكُ دونَ النَظمِ في المَسَدِ

Cannot bear destruction when it comes

And pearls are destroyed when not threaded
