لَيسَ اِغتِنامُ الصَديقِ شَأني

فَلا تَكُن شَأنَكَ اِغتِنامي

It is not my way to take advantage of a friend

So do not make it your way to take advantage of me

في الأَرضِ حَيٌّ وَغَيرُ حَيٍّ

فَجامِدٌ بَينَنا وَنامِ

On earth there is the living and the non-living

So let stillness be between us and sleep

غُيِّبَ مَيتٌ فَما رَأَتهُ

عَينٌ سِوى رُؤيَةِ المَنامِ

A dead man has passed whom

No eye has seen except in a dream's sight

فَلا يُبالِ اللَبيبُ مِنّا

في مَنسِمٍ حَلَّ أَو سَنامِ

So the sensible among us does not care

If an assembly is convened or dispersed

نَأيُ زُنامِ أَوانَ يُدهى

حَدَّثَ بِالنايِ عَن زُنامِ

The flute of times told of the flute of companions

When the time of sorrow played its tune

وَالغَدرُ في الآدَمِيِّ طَبعٌ

فَاِحتَرِزي قَبلَ أَن تَنامي

And betrayal is the nature of mankind

So beware before you sleep

مَنِ اِدَّعى أَنَّهُ وَفِيٌّ

فَليَنتَسِب في سِوى الأَنامِ

Whoever claims to be loyal

Let him trace his lineage to other than mankind
