1. Shun the tavern of tawny wine

    and forsake your own tavern forever.

  2. Do not let loose upon the breach

    your wolf, in heedlessness.

  3. And do not raise to anyone but God,

    in the pitch-black night, your melodies.

  4. O Time, may God curse you!

    Never have you let your joyful one savor joy,

  5. nor have you freed from sickness

    your sore-stricken one, whose body it shatters.

  6. Then say: “Our Lord, Your relief is for

    whoever hopes in You, and so is Your fragrant bounty.”

  7. For You have set Your Jayḥān flowing

    through the earth, and Your Sayḥān;

  8. and You have made Your Shaybān flow

    with sustenance—and Your Milḥān as well.
