يُكسى الوَليدُ جَديدَ العُمرِ يَلبَسَهُ
وَكُلَّ يَومٍ يَرِثُّ المَلبَسُ الغالي
The newborn is clothed in life’s new garment and wears it;
yet with every day the precious garment grows threadbare.
يَظَلُّ في المَهدِ لا يَسطيعُ جَلسَتَهُ
وَسَيرُهُ لِلمَنايا رَهنُ إِبغالِ
He remains in the cradle, unable even to sit,
while his journey toward death is pledged to headlong haste.
يَضيقُ صَدرُ الفَتى ما لَم يُوافِ لَهُ
شُغلاً فَيَحتالُ لِلدُنيا بِأَشغالِ
The young man’s heart constricts unless he finds for himself
some occupation—then he schemes for worldly life with endless tasks.
