When my day comes, let me be laid to rest in a place

on earth where no one has ever dug a grave.

Such are mankind: if God requites them for what

they deliberately sought, He would spare neither ignorant nor learned.

He finds anguish in the company of the living and the dead—

whoever, knowing humankind, has laid their secrets bare.

Would that I did not witness the Gathering among them

when they are raised disheveled, their heads dust-covered.

When my resting place is finished in a spot that comforts the eye,

then—may God guide you—add one span more to its breadth.

And if they ask about my creed, it is reverent fear

of God: I preach neither human power nor compulsion.
