Who will help me forsake all food? For eat—
—ing has driven humankind to ruin.
I will not bereave a mother of her suckling young, nor
share the milk with this young calf.
I live on wholesome plants—but can
a young man’s frame be free of knots?
My sound reason has emboldened my heart to face death,
while the soul is fashioned by nature for cowardice.
