Alas, O John, you have not succeeded
If you abandon your dictionary
My advice to you in life
Is to stick to your lexicon
Nothing remains of days
Except Moses and his staff
And O monk, I urge you
Not to sound your church bells
He who came to harm you
With his bow and arrows
Solitude will not protect you
If you descend from your altar
And O scholar, why don't you forbid
Your gown's train to drag
I fear time will replace
The blessings of wealth with your kiss
Happier is he who buys
From your glory what befriends him
Won't you rise up for battle
And call for tumult your steeds?
How long will you keep your cloak
Imprisoned, and your peacock?
For the wild beasts in the desert
Are like their hawk, your hawk
You will not be safe in India
From your rooster's talons
It is the custom of fate
To startle your doorkeeper
Ask your first blessing
About that, and your cook
