Do not begin with enmity towards me

For your Christ to me is like my Muhammad

Does the morning light squint at a late riser

Or are we altogether in eternal darkness

The blind whose insights cannot find guidance

Or a seer forever with bleary eyes

A body tortured in life I thought

Feeling the envy of moldering bones

Swords may rest in their sheaths

    And remain weary when undrawn

Who will lend me a body that feels no misery

But rather counts as dust or permafrost

A spirit once joined to a person remained

Both it and he in the grip of lingering illness

If you are a wind, o wind, lay still

Or if you are a flame, o flame, die down
