يا رَبِّ لا أَدعوا لَميسَ كَما دَعا
أَوسٌ وَلا دَعوى زُهَيرٍ حارِ
O Lord, I do not invoke Mayas as Aus invoked her,
Nor Zuhair's invocation at dawn;
وَالنَفسُ لاجِأَةٌ إِلى جَسَدٍ لَها
خُلِقَت مُحاذِرَةً مِنَ الإِصحارِ
The soul seeks refuge in a body created for it,
Fearing the desert's annihilation;
وَغَدَت مَحاراتُ الحَجيجِ إِلى مِناً
وَكَأَنَّما يَنظِمنَ دُرَّ مَحارِ
The pilgrims' zeal at Mina is like
Their threading of precious pearls;
يَخبِطنَ في قَيظٍ سَرابَ هَواجِرٍ
وَيُخَلنَ فيهِ الرَوضَ بِالأَسحارِ
They grope in scorching haze for a mirage of maidens,
And leave at dawn the garden's greenery.
