A fool who feigns delight is hardly wise,
For in this life what lasting joy lies?
A little while of pleasure we may own,
Midst countless hours of sorrow we have known.
Mirth, want, forgetfulness and heedlessness,
Renown, disgrace - all empty nothingness.
This world's a place we briefly occupy,
And time for us is but to pass and fly.
Recount the mighty heroes if you can,
For nights like these make little of a man.
The morning star at dawn begins to fade,
Its fleeting beauty destined to evade.
