1. يُلامُ المُمسِكُ الإِعطاءَ حَتّى

    جُفونٌ ما تُساعِدُ بِاِنهِمالِ

    The withholder of giving is blamed until

    Eyelids that do not help with blinking

  2. أَسيئي في فِعالٍ أَو كَلامٍ

    فَقَد جَرَّبتِ صَبري وَاِحتِمالي

    Whether I acted poorly in deed or speech

    You have tested my patience and endurance

  3. إِذا الحَيَوانُ فُضَّ العَقلُ مِنهُ

    فَما فَضلُ الأَنيسِ عَلى النِمالِ

    When the animal's intellect departs from it

    What virtue has a companion over a camel?

  4. أَرى زَمَناً تَقادَمَ غَيرَ فانٍ

    فَسُبحانَ المُهَيمِنِ ذي الكَمالِ

    I see time passing by, not vanishing

    Glory to the Overseer of Perfection

  5. قَدِ اِكتَحَلَت عُيونٌ لِلثُرَيّا

    بِما يُربي عَلى كُثُبِ الرِمالِ

    Eyes have lined with kohl for wealth

    With what is nurtured on the dunes' ridges

  6. غَدَونا سائِرينَ عَلى وِفازٍ

    صُحاةً مِثلَ شُرّابِ ثِمالِ

    In the morning we walked the wilderness

    Vigilant like the drinkers of camel milk

  7. عَلَى الفَرَسَينِ لا فَرَسَي رِهانٍ

    أَوِ الجَمَلَينِ لَيسا كَالجِمالِ

    Not two riding horses or a wager

    Nor two camels akin to perfection

  8. فَلا يُعجَب بِصورَتِهِ جَميلٌ

    فَإِنَّ القُبحَ يُطوى كَالجَمالِ

    So let not the beautiful pride in their image

    For ugliness can be folded like beauty

  9. وَما غَضَبي إِذا جَرَتِ القَضايا

    بِتَفضيلِ اليَمينِ عَلى الشِمالِ

    I am not angry when events unfold

    With preferring right over left

  10. كَذاكَ الدَهرُ إِظلامٌ وَصُبحٌ

    وَريحٌ مِن جَنوبٍ أَو شِمالِ

    Thus is the passage of time, darkness and dawn

    And wind from south or north

  11. بِلا مالٍ عَنِ الدُنيا رَحيلي

    وَصُعلوكاً خَرَجتُ بِغَيرِ مالِ

    With no money I departed the world

    And destitute I left without wealth
