1. لَقَد نَفَقَ الرَديءُ وَرُبَّ مُرٍّ

    مِنَ الأَقواتِ يُجعَلُ في الصَحافِ

    The ignoble man perished, and however much bitterness

    There was in food, it was placed in baskets,

  2. وَأَكرَمَني عَلى عَيبي رِجالٌ

    كَما رُوِيَ القَريضُ عَلى الزِحافِ

    And a man honored me despite my fault

    As al-Quraish were mounted on camels without saddles,

  3. وَمَن يَركَب إِلى الهَيجاءِ خَيلاً

    فَإِنَّ سِواهُ يُقدِمُ وَهُوَ حافي

    And he who rides horses to battle,

    His opponent advances while he is barefoot.
