أَمّا الصَحابِ فَقَد مَرّوا وَما عادوا

وَبَينَنا بِلِقاءِ المَوتِ ميعادُ

The companions have passed away, never to return,

And death's meeting awaits us all.

سِرٌّ قَديمٌ وَأَمرٌ غَيرُ مُتَّضِحٍ

فَهَل عَلى كَشفِنا لِلحَقِّ إِسعادُ

An ancient secret, an unclear matter,

Does revealing the truth bring happiness?

سيرانِ ضِدّانِ مِن رَوحٍ وَمِن جَسَدٍ

هَذا هُبوطٌ وَهَذا فيهِ إِصعادُ

Two contrary paths of spirit and body,

One descending, one ascending.

أَخذُ المَنايا سِوانا وَهِيَ تارِكَةٌ

قَبيلَنا عَظَّةٌ مِنها وَإِبعادُ

Death takes us equally, though leaving

Examples and warnings behind.

تَوَقَّعوا السَيلَ أَوفى عارِضٌ وَلَهُ

في العَينِ بَرقٌ وَفي الأَسماعِ إِرعادُ

They anticipated the torrent's sudden onset,

Lightning in the eye and thunder in the ear.
