1. النَفسُ في العالَمِ العُلوِيِّ مَركَزُها

    وَلَيسَ في الجَوِّ لِلأَجسادِ مُزدَرَعُ

    The soul's center in the highest world dwells

    While no abode for bodies in thin air found

  2. تَفَرَّعَ الناسُ عَن أَصلٍ بِهِ دَرَنٌ

    فَالعالَمونَ إِذا مَيَّزتَهُم شَرَعُ

    Though from one root mankind diversified fells

    The learned, if distinguished, in law are bound

  3. وَالجَدُّ آدَمُ وَالمَثوى أَديمُ ثَرىً

    وَإِن تَخالَفَتِ الأَهواءُ وَالشِرَعُ

    Adam's the root, and the home but inches of ground

    Though wills and laws be at variance and repel

  4. ما رَبَّةُ التاجِ وَالقُرطَينِ مارِيَةٌ

    إِلّا كَمارِيَةٍ في إِثرِها ذَرَعُ

    No queen with crown and ear-rings is Mary

    Except like goat pursued by kid free-bounding

  5. وَإِنَّ خَنساءَ إِذ تُزجي قَصائِدَها

    نَظيرُ خَنساءَ يَدعو ظِمأَها الكرَعُ

    When Khansa elegies recites clear and airy

    The match of Khansa her thirst with drafts drowning

  6. ما أَكثَرَ الوَرَعَ المَزؤودَ مِن جُبُنٍ

    فينا وَإِن قَلَّ في أَشياعِنا الوَرَعُ

    Abundant the devotion from cowardice flowing

    Amongst us, though rare in our ranks the devout

  7. وَلابِسُ المِغفَرِ الدَرعيِّ جاءَ بِهِ

    كَالسيِّدِ أَدرَعَ في لَيلٍ لَهُ دُرَعُ

    Clad in forgiveness' coat of mail he came

    Like a lord armed on night of assault endowed

  8. وَالعَيشُ ماءُ مُزادٍ راحَ يَحمِلُهُ

    طاوي الفَلاةِ وَأَنفاسُ الفَتى جُرَعُ

    Life's water carried in desert-roamer's supply

    Necks of youths gulp whilst lips of wanderer parched

  9. إِذا دُعيتُ لِأَمرٍ عادَني بِأَذىً

    أَو رُزءِ دينٍ فَإِبطائي هُوَ السَرَعُ

    If called to a thing that hurts or faith decried

    My hanging back is best speed forward marched

  10. غَدَت جُيوشُ المَنايا حَولَ واحِدَةٍ

    مِنَ النُفوسِ عَلَيها الجَيشُ يَقتَرِعُ

    Towards one soul armies of death draw nigh

    On it hosts batter, assault and tear

  11. إِذا أُبيدَت فَما عِندي إِذا أُخِذَت

    فَرعٌ يَنوبُ وَلا عَذراءُ تُفتَرَعُ

    If destroyed, what have I, if seized and caught?

    No foal remains, no calf suckled or reared

  12. وَإِن حَبانِيَ سَعداً مَن بِهِ ثِقَتي

    فَلَيسَ يُنقَصُ حَظّي أَنَّني ضَرَعُ

    If Sa'd's gladdened me, in whom my trust was wrought

    No loss for me that I was milked and drained

  13. تَشابَهَ الإِنسُ إِلّا أَن يَشُذَّ حِجىً

    وَالطَيرُ شَتّى وَمِنها الفُتخُ وَالمُرَعُ

    Mankind's similar, unique eccentric when deemed

    Diverse birds, among them bald coots and cranes
