When the Rudayni lances stray, distaffs rise to meet them,
With cotton and spindles upon them.
She prayed to her Lord to destroy the swords and spears;
Yet each, by God’s power, will pass away.
The children of Eve have hypocrisy fixed in their nature:
Some pursue deceit in earnest, and some in jest.
They gave freely so people would say, “They were generous,” and charged forward
So that a warrior facing a foe in battle would be remembered.
The gazelles of Fartaj have betrayed you,
And the lions of Khiffan, who do not flirt.
How strange that the sun should have no radiance,
And that the stations should not bear the full moon on its night journey!
Do swift horses rejoice in praise,
Or those heavily laden, mature camels in words of acclaim?
