أَلَمّا تَعجَبي مِن غَيرِ سُخرِ

لِقَدحِ الدَهرِ في جَبَلٍ وَصَخرِ

Alas! Do not be astonished at the vicissitudes of fate,

In the mountains and rocks shaped by time’s adversity.

وَمَخرِ الغادِرِ الهَجَرِيِّ أَرضاً

لَهَتكِ أَوانِسٍ كَبَناتِ مَخرِ

And the land ruined by the treacherous departing friend,

Whose flight destroyed the homes like collapsing rocks.

وَما كانَ التَجارِبُ مِن رِجالٍ

سِوى مُلكٍ يُرامُ وَحُبِّ فَخرِ

Men of experience were never anything

But kings with ambitions and prideful boasting.

كَفاكَ اللُبُّ رِحلَةَ جاهِليٍّ

تُزيرُكَ أَيلَةً وَبِلادَ نَخرِ

Your foolish journey as a nomad in the days of ignorance

Leads you to barren wastelands and rugged lands.

وَمَن يَذخَر لِطولِ العَيشِ مالاً

فَإِنَّ تُقايَ عِندَ اللَهِ ذُخري

And whoever hoards wealth for longevity,

His provisions are with Allah, the best hoard.
