O heart, I never call you to a noble deed
But you shrink from it and delay.
Death sips even stagnant water it finds distasteful
And visits the Bedouin Arabs and the Nabataeans.
I have dug for certainty with a mind
Whose digging could scarcely draw water forth.
And death will surely overtake our curly-haired and our straight-haired alike;
And what do you know of al-Nu‘man at Sabat?
Will this death graciously set me free?
For life has bound me and tightened my bonds.
