عَجِبتُ القَومَ جَنَّبو ثَمَنَ الغِنا
وَقَد شَرِبوا كاساتِهِم بِدُيونِ
I marvel at the people who avoided the cost of singing,
Yet drank their cups on credit.
وَأَفضَلُ عِندي مِن أَكُفٍّ تَداوَلَت
سُلافَةَ خَمّارٍ أَكُفُّ قُيونِ
To me, better than hands that passed around
A wine seller’s finest wine are the hands of smiths.
يَقولونَ لَم نَشرَب مَقالَ تَكَذُّبٍ
وَقَد شَهِدَت في أَوجُهٍ وَعُيونِ
They say, “We did not drink”—a lying claim,
For the evidence shows in their faces and eyes.
