1. I dissemble with people; I have been afflicted by them.

    And how can deliverance from them be near to me?

  2. Whoever lives without concealing his feelings from those he associates with

    Treats companions and close friends poorly.

  3. How many a friend wishes he would hear of my death,

    Yet, if I complain, shows concern for me and offers to ransom me.

  4. I have kept company with my age, whose habit is grievous treachery;

    So if I betray, my age has infected me.

  5. I do not care, though my sleeves are free of flaws,

    If death should lay me low.

  6. When I join my peer in the dust, praise and blame

    From people in pairs and singly will slip away from my grave.

  7. Does the pilgrims’ Kaaba take pride, when it has no sense,

    In the multitude of visitors and attendants?

  8. There are two feasts in the year; they gain nothing from what they are given

    That they should show delight when called feasts.

  9. How often the two young men have made people serve them for passing gain,

    Through humiliation, though both are servants of God.

  10. As for the two new things, my garment and my body,

    They will wear out, while the two ever-new ones will not.

  11. The cloak of youth and the weaver’s cloak have both grown worn;

    And can two cloaks endure the two spells of cold?
