1. I seek refuge in God from people who, when they hear

    good news, conceal it, but spread bad news.

  2. What is decreed comes to pass; concern cannot avert it,

    and those who are obeyed wield power in this world.

  3. Al-Najashi attained kingship by fate,

    despite people who sold him to merchants.

  4. And Khalid ibn Sinan is not diminished

    in worth because he lived among a people who neglected him.

  5. Why do I see the callers to error speaking out,

    while the callers to right guidance fall silent for fear of death?

  6. Let people of rank take no joy in a newborn,

    for those who announce the child’s birth are also its mourners.

  7. So it is with time: it sang to those who kept it company,

    yet those who pursued it returned with nothing but loss.

  8. God is truth, though your doubts may surge,

    and your foremost duty is to heed Him.
