شُئِمتِ يا هِمَّةً عادَت شَآمِيَّةً
مِن بَعدِ ما أوطِنَت عَصراً بِبَغداذِ
You have grown ill-starred, O resolve, returning Syrian
after dwelling for a time in Baghdad.
وَلَستِ ذاتَ نَخيلٍ لا وَلا أُنُفٍ
كَرمِيَّةٍ فَتَقولي شَفَّني داذي
You have neither date palms nor fresh vines
to say, “My Dād has worn me thin.”
