1. كفى البدر حسناً أن يقال نديدها

    فيزهو ولكن عن مثال يذودها

    The full moon's beauty needs no praise—it shines

    Radiant, yet it pales before her face's signs

  2. وحسب غصون البان أن قوامها

    يقاس به مياسها وميودها

    The bending boughs are judged by their straightness, while

    Her graceful gait gauges their gentle style

  3. أسيرة حجلٍ مطلقاتٍ لحاظها

    قضى حسنها أن ليس يسلو عميدها

    A doe, released from captivity, stands there

    While beauty's sentence sets her spirit free

  4. وليس عجيباً أن شفتني بنظرةٍ

    وحملني ما لا أطيق صدودها

    It's no surprise that one glance from her takes me

    To heights unbearable, that I can barely see

  5. فكم نظرةٍ قادت إلى القلب حسرةٍ

    يقطع أنفاس الحياة ورودها

    How many a look leads the heart to mourn?

    Her gaze arrests my breath, my life uptorn

  6. فيا عجباً كم تسلب الأسد في الوغى

    وتسلبنا مرحى شنوةٍ عيدها

    Amazing! How she takes the lions, brave, away

    As she takes me on a feast day from the prey

  7. وجذوة نارٍ في الخدود لهيبها

    تشب ولكن في القلوب وقودها

    A spark's in the cheeks—though the flame's blaze is dim,

    It kindles a wildfire, raging fierce in him

  8. إذا آنستها مقلتي ظل صاعقاً

    جناني وقال القلب لا دك طودها

    When my eyes meet hers, lightning strikes so quick

    My heart admits no pause, interdicts no sickness

  9. وسرب ظباء مشرقاتٍ شموسها

    تذب لها عد النجوم عديدها

    A flock of radiant gazelles prance by,

    Outshining every star that dots the sky

  10. تمانع عما في القصور صقورها

    وتحمي الذي تحمي الكناس أسودها

    With proud falcons she'll outsoar the palace fore

    As fiercely as lions guard their wounded corps

  11. تغار من الطيف الملم حماتها

    ويغضب من مر النسيم عنيدها

    She envies the waving little branches, brash

    And scolds the teasing winds that o'er them dash

  12. إذا ما رأت في النوم طيفاً يزورها

    توهمه في النوم طيفاً يرودها

    If in her dream, a specter comes to call

    She'll scare it off, or make it crawl or fall,

  13. نظرنا فأولتنا السقام عيونها

    ولذنا فأولتنا النحول زرودها

    A single glance from her smote me so sick

    Her blows have caused me pain and worn me thin

  14. وزرنا وأسد الحي تدني لحاظها

    ونسمع من غاب الرماح وعيدها

    I visited while traveling nights unknown

    So I was stoned by spies who marked each stone

  15. فيا ساعد اللَه المحب لأنه

    يرى غمرات الموت ثم يرودها

    Without her hair's veil, morn would have revealed my track

    But instead trapped the sun, turned back its march

  16. ولما ألمت للزيارة خلسةً

    وسجف الليالي مطلقاتٍ بنودها

    She charges me white nights and black combined

    When very youth itself leaps forth, declined

  17. سعى بيننا الواشون حتى عبيرها

    ونمت بها الأعداء حتى عقودها

    She threatens me sans motive, full of storms

    To make me shrink through lightening performing

  18. ومرت بنا لولا حبائل شعرها

    خطا الصبح لكن قيدته قيودها

    How can I lead when she's commander still?

    I'll follow her; she guides against my will

  19. تكلفني بيض الليالي وسودها

    أموراً بأدناها يشيب وليدها

    My will won't bend like wood smoked brown from flame

    Her pride and glory my defeat and shame

  20. وترعد لي من دون غاية مطلبي

    لتصعقني أبراقها ورعودها

    Measure for measure she demands from me

    And more she takes, denying charity

  21. وهيهات أن أعطي قيادي صروفها

    فتقتادني بل لا أزال أقودها

    I am but mortal man, ambition's fool

    Good hope and deed my only grace and rule

  22. وما كان أن يذوي لها عود عزمتي

    وتخضع هماتي ويخضر عودها

    If man seeks goodness, God praise on him showers

    I praise that I seek goodness in my hours

  23. أكايلها صاعاً بصاعٍ وإنني

    أطفف في كيلي لها وأزيدها

    What favor I can't thank isn't a gift

    Nor can I 2

  24. وما أنا إلا آيةً

    وحسن المساعي الطيبات شهودها

    The path to virtue spans our mortal strife

    Why should I sell freedom to buy a wife?

  25. إذا نشر المعروف حمداً على امرئٍ

    رضى الحمد أني في المساعي حميدها

    I'll roam this wide, wide world that's hers by right,

    With polished beauty and horizons bright

  26. ومن نعمةٍ لا يطبيني طريفها

    وما إن صباني للمعاصي تليدها

    The landmarks of the wasteland will inspire

    My soul while excellence my vision and desire

  27. ولم أرض ذل النفس في مطلب الغنى

    إذا استعبدت أخلاق قومٍ عبيدها

    If I should fall in pits of despair, there

    Comes mercy, saving me from hate and scare

  28. سأترك ظهر الأرض مفلولة الشبا

    صياقلها والعقرب الوخد قودها

    Sprint like a rabbit; kneel down gentle-high

    Dawn caresses her, dusk engrosses my

  29. وأجعل أكوار المهارى منازلاً

    مشيدةً والعزم مني مشيدها

    The dark ignites her; the gloaming crowns her deeds

    The sorriest lot for this lives on her needs

  30. إذا هبطت غوراً تغور عيونها

    وتنجد إن غصت بهن نجودها

    East wind leads her travails; west wind brings her rest

    Each daybreak disappoints; it failed her quest

  31. وتعدو كبنت الجون طوراً وتارةً

    لتركع حتى يستكين سجودها

    She hoped that sunlight was pure water, clear

    But gained no moisture, escaping in her fear

  32. يطلحها المسرى ويلغبها الضحى

    ويدئبها إيغالها ووخيدها

    Come evening she hopes for rest at least

    But dawns defeat her, troubled without peace

  33. وحاضت لأولى الليل حتى إذا بدا

    لها الصبح خاضت واستبان وريدها

    Hoping revived her; despair her friend became

    Light and darkness nullified all the same

  34. وظنت لعاب الشمس ماء لترتوي

    فما انتفعت حتى استقل عمودها

    I've pledged to bear her to her destination's role

    And that she'll find my goodness like a foal

  35. ويرجو بإقبال الدجى راحة الوجى

    فحار بها من بعد جهدٍ جهودها

    She's reached the earth whose gods could not avail

    The heavens fail; the only comfort in their tale

  36. وما زادها إلا الذميل رحاؤها

    وما زادها إلا أواراً ورودها

    Her wish ascends to good guidance supplied

    By he who's mercy turns from death and guide

  37. لها أمل مني وراءً بسوقها

    وحسن رجا مني أماماً يقودها

    When she came masked to visit in the dark of night

    Dangers stood guard until the morning light

  38. قطعت بها الأرض التي خب آلها

    وبات بها الجنان يشجي نشيدها

    Her perfume caused such trouble and such strife

    Her enemies nearly reaped her life

  39. علت تتقاضاني الوخيد وإنه

    إلى نحو خير المرسلين وخيدها

    If not her hair, dawn would have shown my trace

    But instead it trapped us without grace

  40. ترض الحصى شوقاً لمن سبح الحصا له

    سباع الحي حيته سيدها

    She charges me with black and white night's techniques

    When youth just springs, it withers and fleaks

  41. وكلمة الظبي الفريد وجروةٌ

    أجل حذرته حين جيد ثريدها

    She threatens me without a motive why

    With lightning and clouds across my sky

  42. ومن شهدت توراة موسى بفضله

    وإنجيل عيسى ثم نون وهودها

    How can I lead, when she leads every side?

    I follow her; my will is nullified

  43. محمد خير المرسلين أخيرها

    وأولها في الفضل وهو وحيدها

    My will can't bend like pliant wood turns brown

    While glory and wonder make my spirit drown

  44. بمولده قد أخمدت نار فارس

    ولولاه لم يسند صحيحاً خمودها

    The verses fail to capture your full essence

    But my soul hopes your heaven finds acceptance

  45. وإيوان كسرى قد تساقط بعد ما

    بأعلامه ينبيهم من يرودها

    Through your praise, my case seeks justice swift

    Against the hordes whose scorn my soul does sift

  46. وفي كفه عين من الماء قد جرت

    تميراً وكان القوم منها ورودها

    I've written prose in hope you'll hear my call

    My friend, can I sleep or must I write it all?

  47. وشق له البدر البدر المنير وظللت

    على رأسه بيض الليالي وسودها

    Blessings on you whenever perils loom

    And good faith guide you past the lonely tomb

  48. وكم آيةٍ تترى له إثر آيةٍ

    يفوت عديد الرمل طرّاً عديدها

    Be greeted by Abu Bakr when you lie

    And Omar rule just as the dawn rules sky

  49. ومعجزةٍ أعيت وما اسطاع نقلها

    سواه إليهم والإله شهيدها

    You left this world forgetting not one soul

    Thanking the Almighty making hearts whole

  50. فسبحان من أسرى به بعد هجعةٍ

    إلى حضرةٍ منه قريب بعيدها

    Blessings upon you till the age we dwell

    And every field and meadow rings your bell

  51. ففاء وقد أعطي الرسالة راقياً

    مطارح قد كان منه يريدها

    To you my Prince but to the Lord beside

    As every cause is lost and souls have died

  52. فأبرا قلوباً بالصوارم والقنا

    وكانت قلوباً ثائراتٍ حقودها

    O you whose pledge of truth will never bend

    You promised triumph until the end

  53. وقام وشمس الدين لم يبد قرنها

    ومات وفق الراس قام عمودها

    I pledged myself before your holy court

    As shooting stars all hopes do transport

  54. وفارق دنياه وقد قر مذعنا

    له شاكر نعمى الهدى وجحودها

    I sent my wishes out like diving birds

    They returned with promise that was heard

  55. عليه صلاة اللَه ما ريع الحيا

    وما روضة مدت عليه برودها

    I told you of conditions you were aware

    Repeatedly, until you truly cared

  56. أملاي بل مولى البرايا جميعها

    وشافعنا والخلق خابت جدودها

    Sins that if stacked could barely stand

    Save me, raise me! Lend your blessed hand!

  57. ويا صادق الوعد الأمين وعدتني

    ببشرى وشرواكم وفاء وعودها

    I call to you who answers sincere plea

    And grants when asked in privacy

  58. بسوحك قد ألقيت رحلي فقابلت

    نجوم رجائي فيك زهراً سعودها

    Have certainty my prayers will come through

    When bonds with you are straight and true

  59. وأرسلت آمالي خماصاً بطونها

    إليك فجاءت مفعماتٍ جلودها

    How many hearts by you found holy grace

    When struck by arrows in that sacred place?

  60. شكوت لك الحال التي لا أعودها

    وإن كنت أبديها لكم وأعيدها

    To shepherd's staffs, the Arabs bled and bruised

    But you preserved those souls that rightly choosed

  61. ذنوباً لو الدنيا تحمل بعضها

    ولو عشر عشر العشر ثقلاً يؤودها

    This poem's deed redeems my standing ground

    Before the judgment where despair is crowned

  62. سل اللَه لي فيها العظيم شفاعةً

    أكون بها بين العباد سعيدها

    I called you: you who fail no needy soul

    Whose gracious power makes injured whole

  63. دعوتك يا من لا يخيب راجياً

    وإن سئل النعما بسر يفيدها

    My burdens borne, all hopes now shine

    Met by your spirit, transforming mine

  64. وغالب ظني بل يقيني بأنها

    تجاب إذا جلت إليك عقودها

    I have seen Arabs bleeding, sore distressed

    But you healed them, gave them peace and rest

  65. بكم مستجيرٌ ملتجٍ بحماكم

    جنيت عظيمات وإني طريدها

    It's enough that these poor verses give

    A glimpse of what within my soul does live

  66. وإني رأيت العرب تحفر بالعصا

    فيمنع لاجيها ويحمي ضهيدها

    The best of all is that it's witness bears

    The host of heaven: no truer praise it shares

  67. وحسبي بما قرضت فيك قصيدةً

    يناشد عني في المعاد نشيدها

    I hope you see me as your servant, Sir

    Make this, my poem, acceptable to her

  68. وأحسن شيءٍ أنني قد جلوتها

    عليك وأملاك السماء شهودها

    How many refugees by you restored

    Were raised in glory by some gracious word?

  69. تروم بها نفسي الجزاء فكن لها

    قبولاً فإني في ثناك مجيدها

    Reward me, reward me for my song and sighs

    Refuse me not your generous heart's prize

  70. فلابن زهير قد سمحت ببردةٍ

    عليه فأثرى من ذويه رهيدها

    Accept these maidens made by human care

    Who look to you, all good to bless and share

  71. أجرني أجرني أجزنيأجر مدحتي

    فأبيتها مني عليه وفودها

    Prolixity gives them their charm and worth

    As conciseness denies their grace and mirth

  72. وقابل ثناها بالقبول فإنها

    عرائس فكر والقبول يقودها

    If verses fail to fully sing your praise

    It shows your might, not wanting in my lays·

  73. وإن زانها تطويلها واطرادها

    فقد شانها تقصيرها وسمودها

    My odes about you help my humble soul

    Against the raging currents where I stroll

  74. إذا ما القوافي لم تحط بصفاتكم

    فشتان منها نزرها وعتيدها

    For you I'm sleepless, restless in the night

    My friend, can prose or poem give delight?

  75. بمدحك أرجو حجتي وهو حجتي

    على عصبة يطغى علي عنيدها

    God send you blessings when hard trials disquiet

    And faith console beyond the lonely quiet

  76. وأسهر في نظم القوافي ولم أقل

    خليلي هل من رقدةٍ أستفيدها

    Cover in death may Abu Bakr remain under

    While Omar rules just as the dawn rules thunder

  77. صلاة من الرحمن تغشاك كلما

    جزعن الفلا كوم الركاب وفودها

  78. وعمت أبا بكرٍ ضجيعيك والرضى

    إذاً عمراً ما عاقب البيض سودها
