1. As for prayer, fasting, and all that is like them,

    ignorance concerning them is excusable before they become obligatory.

  2. But when the prescribed duty’s time arrives, no latitude remains

    for ignorance: one must perform it before its time passes.

  3. One may learn its explanation from trustworthy people or from others—

    from a child, from a written page, or from a companion of one’s youth.

  4. Some, however, accept the view of a sincere, humble believer, and likewise

    of a jurist; they deem the unbelievers’ word corrupt and worthless.
