نجمع والمجموع يكلا ويترك

ونرقع والمرقوع يبلى ويهتك

We collect, and what is collected perishes and is abandoned

We mend, and what is mended wears out and unravels

يا مغرور وكيف تطيع الغرور انما

الحياة الدنيا إلا متاع الغرور

O deluded one, why do you obey delusion? Verily

The life of this world is nothing but the wares of delusion

بنا حرم الدنيا الخراب معمر

ومحترم الأخرى بنا فهو مهتك

We built structures that decay with time

Yet we revere the next life with buildings that crumble

كيف الأمان وليس البقاء إلا قليلاً والآخرة

خير لمن اتقى ولا تظلمون فتيلا

How can there be safety when there is little permanence and the next life

Is better for those who are righteous and you will not be wronged a whit

نرجّي رجاء دونه الموت حائل

ونحذر والتقدير ما عنه مسلك

We hope a hope that is obstructed by death

And we take precautions though destiny allows no path

تموج بنا الآمال كما تموج الآل

فالحكم للّه الكبير المتعالي

Hopes surge in us like surging waves

But judgment belongs to Great Exalted God

ونسلك منهاجاً ولم ندر بالذي

إليه على العقبى من الحال يسلك

And we follow a path without knowing that which

Our state on the return journey will follow

لا يملك العالم لنفسه نقيرا ولا فتيلا إن هم

إلا كالأنعام بل هم أضل سبيلا

The world cannot control for itself even a squeak or a wick, indeed

They are just like cattle, nay, more misguided

ونفرك أخرانا على حب هذه

وهذي التي أولى من الأصل تفرك

Yet we exert our utmost for love of this

Though the original more deserves such exertion

إلام الاصطناع لمن لا يجب له الاصطناع

وما الحياة الدنيا في الآخرة إلا متاع

Why adorn whom adornment is not owed?

And what is the life of this world in the Hereafter but wares?

ألا إنما الآجال أمست وأصبحت

وهن على الآمال عمرك تضحك

Lo the terms have expired morning and night

As they mock your lifespan and laugh

تاللَه لقد خلعنا عذار الحفر والرسنا فمن

زين له سوء عمله فرآه حسنا

By God we cast off the fineries of excavation and abandoned what

Embellished evil deeds making them appear good

نؤمِّل آمالا ومن دون نيلها

مؤملها عن مدرك الغاي يدرك

We anticipate hopes without attaining them

Thus the anticipator attains the goal by attaining

اقعد القواة امغاطها وأعماطها فهل ينظرون

إلا الساعة أن تأتيهم بغتة فقد جاء أشراطها

Sit the faculties, blink them and their visions, do they watch

But for the Hour to come suddenly? Its portents have come

فكم نائم في راحة صدر ليله

وأخراه في الأرماس يرمى ويترك

How many sleep comfortably through the night

While others are flung in graves and abandoned

ما لكم والنصال في المفاخر الهاكم

التكاثر حتى زرتم المقابر

What is it with you boasting pride that destroys you

Multiplying until you visited graves

ولذة دنيانا تحول نغائصا

وبيض ليالينا تحن وتحلك

And the bliss of our life transforms into plunges

And the whites of our nights frown and dissolve

نحن رقيق في زي المعتقين

إلى مدارج مطمع الدنيا مرتقين

We are frail adorned like emancipated slaves

Ascending by worldly ambitions

ولدار الآخرة خير دار

ولنعم دار المتقين

And the next house is the best house

And best is the house of the righteous

فما مر يوم من هموم مقدس

ولا ليلة مرت ولا الحزن ممعك

When did a day pass without worries of holiness

Nor night without sadness or tears from you

لبستم حلة المعتبين وتجاهلتم المنهج المستبين

إن أنتم إلا في ضلال مبين

You donned the garb of penitents yet ignored the clear path

You are but in clear misguidance

إذا مات منا ميت فار حزننا

وإن نحن واريناه في اللحد يدهك

When one of us dies, our sorrow flees,

And when we bury him in the grave he dissolves

تأمنون السرور لا سرور وتطيعون الغرور

إلى مناش الغرور وغركم باللَه الغرور

You feel assured without assurance and obey delusion

To the pastures of delusion and deluded by God is delusion

فهذي هي الدنيا وهذا سبيلها

يموت المغبا والجليل المحنك

Such is this life and this is its way

The deceived and the lofty elder perish

رحم اللَه أقواماً لأمره طائعون ولنهيه سامعون

ولطاعته راجعون إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

May God have mercy upon a people obedient to His command, listeners to His prohibitions

Returning to His obedience, verily we are for God and to Him is the return

وأما التعازي بيننا فهي سنة

يعزي المعزي ذا العزاء ويهلك

As for condolences between us they are a sunna

The consoler consoles the bereaved and perishes

إلى كم أنتم مستبقون كأنكم للبقاء مثبتون

إنك ميت وإنهم ميتون

How long will you outpace as if fixed for eternity?

You will die and they have died

وكيف العزا عمن له في ضمائري

من الحزن واللوعات للفقد مبرك

How can there be consolation for one for whom in my conscience

There is perpetual grief and anguish over the loss?

أيها المحزون لقد سلكت منهج السالكين

حتى تكون حرضا أو تكون من الهالكين

O mourner you have trodden the path of travelers

That you may be a tomb dweller or of the doomed

ثلاثة أولار بهم يمم الردى

ثلاثة أرماس إليهن أسلك

Three friends with whom the days were adorned

Three solaces to whom I walked

كأن عليهم كان وثرا من الردى

فأدركهم في الحال من حيث أدركوا

As if the calamity had cast them to the ground

And so it overtook them suddenly right then

فألقت لهم أيدي المنايا مخالبا

فراحوا وهم بين المخالب أشيدوا

So the claws of death flung at them talons

And they went with the claws clenched around them

هنيئا لكم ماتوا فلا الذنب مقرف

ولا القلب محزون ولا العرض مهتك

Congratulations you have died with no disgraceful sins

Nor saddened hearts, nor sullied honor

ولا من أذى الدنيا بلوا وتنغصوا

ولا نافقوا فيها وعنها تنسكوا

And have not suffered the harms of life and bitterness

Nor were hypocrites in it or ascetics from it

ولا عرفوا الدنيا ولاعرفتهمو

ولا زودوا منها سوى ما تحنكوا

And have not known the life nor it known them

And they took from it only what is dissolved

إلى رحمة الرحمن راحوا فأدركوا

مناهم وهنوا بالذي قد تمسكوا

To God’s mercy they went and attained

Their wishes and rejoiced in what they clung to

أأحمد صبرا واقتداء وأسوة

فلم يبق دهقان ولا متصعلك

Shall I praise enduring, following, and example?

For there remains no dejected or disheveled one

لئن تلبس السلوان عنهم مؤملا

من اللَه عفواً عنك يعفو ويمحك

If you don the potential for forgiveness from them hoping

For God’s pardon, He pardons and erases

فلا ترجع الأحزان ما كان فائتاً

ولا يوسع الأعوال ما اللَه مضنك

So sorrows do not return what has passed

Nor do hardships expand what God has constricted

وإِن سداد العُمر في الصبر والأسى

يقطع أكباد الحزين ويهتك

And the rectitude of life is in grief and anguish

That cuts the livers of the bereaved and wounds

فلا يدمك الانسان ما اللَه قاطع

ولا يقطع الإنسان ما اللَه يدمك

So let not man rupture what God has ruptured

Nor man constrict what God expands

إِذا فاتك الأَمر الذي أنت آمل

فعنه العزا والصبر أَولى وابرك

If the matter you hoped for has evaded you

Then abandon it, patience and resignation are best and purer

فجدك قد أودى غريب وبنته

وجدتك الخدر الرضى المتنسك

For your grandfather has claimed a stranger and his daughter

Your sweet sap root of contentment

ونسلك قد أودى وإنك بعدهم

تعود ولا أصل وفرع مشبك

And your progeny has been claimed and after them

You will return with neither lineage nor branch entwined

فصبراً عسى تلقاهمو في فرادس

من الخلد واستمسك بما قد تمسكوا

So resignation hoping to meet them in the gardens eternal

Immortal, hold fast to what they held fast to

ولا تجعل الأحزان بين حيازم

على حرها تطوى وتكوى وتفرك

And do not let grief between friends

Overcome them, fold, burn, and pull you apart

وإني وإياك الشريكان في الأسى

وإن لم يكن ما قلت بالجبت مشرك

I and you are partners in sorrow

And if what I said was not accurate I do not share in it

فما عنك أمحى اللَه حزناً بغيره

ولا سفك دمع غير ما أنت مسفك

When God does not erase a grief without another

Or spill tears other than what you have spilled
