1. أَنا الغريب فلولا المجد والحسب

    والمنقذان لعمري العلم والأَدب

    I am the stranger, were it not for glory and lineage

    And my saviors: knowledge and literature

  2. ولا يكون غريباً من تكون له

    أَم العلا أمه والمجد فهو أَب

    No one is a stranger if his mother is knowledge

    And his father is glory

  3. فلا تغربت عن أَهل وعن وطن

    فقلت كل غريب فهو مغترب

    I am not estranged from family and homeland

    So I said every stranger is expatriated

  4. لا أَصطفي من بني الأَيام غير صَفٍ

    ولست أَرضى بدوني حيث أَصطحب

    I do not choose from the days except the elite

    And I am not content without where I accompany

  5. قد نفَّرتني السجايا الغُرُّ عن زَمني

    أَنا الصحيح ومن فيه بهم جرب

    The abhorrent traits have repelled me from my time

    I am well and those in it are with scabies

  6. وإِن أَكن كنت منهم عشت دهرهم

    إِن التراب نما من أَصله الذهب

    And if I was one of them I lived their time

    Verily soil originates from gold

  7. وذا الزَمان ومن فيه على جدة

    كانوا على مذهبي لو وقفوا ذهبوا

    And this time and those in it are renewing

    They would have followed my doctrine had they stood still

  8. فالناس أَجناس أَصناف مصنفة

    كالطير باز ومنها الفخت والخرب

    People are different species and types

    Like birds, some are falcon, and some are raven

  9. يا ليت شعري بنسلي إِن تركتهم

    عقبى ولم أَتعب المستخلف العقب

    I wish I knew of my progeny, if I left them

    My offspring, without tiring the succeeding offspring

  10. يا قرة العين يا برد الفؤاد أَما

    تغريك بي نُدبتي من حيث أنتدب

    O joy of the eye, O coolness of the heart, do

    My elegies wherever you are make you sad?

  11. وفيك تحقيق ظن صادق شرفا

    بأَنك الشبل للطيثار تنتسب

    In you is the realization of the truthful nobility

    As you are the cub whose lineage goes back to the mighty lion

  12. وأَنَّ غابك ثقب لا عبئت بها

    فغابة الأسد الحامي الحمى ثقب

    Your absence is a perforation I do not mind

    The forest of the protective, vigilant lion is perforated

  13. يا حمزة يا أَبا الأَشبال تكنية

    لك المكارم ما بين الورى لقب

    O Hamza, O father of cubs, your nickname

    For you all generous virtues between people is a title

  14. لا تجهد النفس للأرزاق في طلب

    فما يزيدك رزقاً ذلك الطلب

    Do not exhaust yourself seeking livelihood

    That seeking does not increase your provision

  15. واسترزق اللَه بالعلم الجلي فقد

    يقال بالعلم جمّ المال تكتسب

    And seek from God sustenance with sublime knowledge

    It is said through knowledge all money is earned

  16. فالكلب أَفضل ممن لا له أَدب

    ولا عفاف ولا علم ولا نشب

    The dog is better than one without manners

    Or chastity, or knowledge or youth

  17. ما الفخر إِلا بطاعات الاله وبال

    علم الشريف وبئس المفخر النسب

    There is no pride but in obeying God and in

    Knowledge of the noble, and wretched is he who boasts his lineage

  18. أَقل شيء من الدنيا كفاك فكم

    بتمرة زال عن ذي السغبة السغب

    The least of worldly things suffices you, thus

    With a date the hunger of the hungry left

  19. عليّ نصحك يا برد الفؤاد ويا

    ضياء عيني وإني راحل كرب

    Heed my advice O coolness of the heart and O

    Light of my eye, and I am leaving worries

  20. لا تقطع السيب الموصول منك إِلى

    باريك بالعلم والتقوى هما السبب

    Do not sever the connection from you to

    Your Creator, through knowledge and piety they are the cause

  21. وأَلف أَلف سلام زار حضرتكم

    كما تزور بنات الروضة السحب

    And a thousand thousand greetings visited your eminence

    As the clouds visit the meadows’ daughters

  22. تعم آلك والأَعمام كلهم

    والأَهل أَو من بكم لِلّه يقترب

    Including your family and uncles, all of them

    And the relatives or those who seek closeness to God through you
