أَلا إِن آلات المداد فتسعة

إليك فخذه معلماً ليس مبهما

Behold, the tools for writing are nine:

Take it from me as a teacher not obscure

فخذ من صحيح الماء ماتي درهم

من الصمغ خذ وزناً ثلاثين درهما

Take from good water two dirhams' worth

Of gum take thirty dirhams in weight

ويجعل في طاس وفي الشمس ساعة

لينحلَّ ذاكَ الماء خلطا مُنَجَّما

And place it in a bowl and in the sun an hour

To dissolve, that water, mixed and starred

وخذ من دقيق العفص عشرين درهماً

يدق بزاج فيه دقاً منعما

And take twenty dirhams of fine wheat flour

To be pounded in it, pounded fine

من الزاج أَوزاناً ثلاث دراهم

لئلا يصير اللون أَغبر أَقتما

Of vitriol take three dirhams' weight

Lest the color turn dusty and dark

وخذ نصف مثقال من الملح أَبيضا

ومن زعفران نصف مثقال بعد ما

And take half a mithqal of white salt

And of saffron half a mithqal afterward

تزيد عليه نصف مثقال سكر

نباتاً من المصري ودخان درهما

Add to it half a mithqal of sugar

A preparation of Egyptian and one dirham of smoke

ومن ماء ريحان قليل يسط به

وأَسقه ماء الصمغ سقياً كمثل ما

And a little basil water to spread with it

And give it as much gum-water as that
