1. أرى بدراً فصار به هلالا

    نحيلاً بعد ما نظر الكمالا

    I see the full moon, now a crescent

    Slim after beholding perfection

  2. وراقته الأكلة منجداتٍ

    فغار سلوة وشكا الكلالا

    Its smoothness eaten by stars

    So it waned while dusk lamented

  3. وحين رأى الجمال مطوحات

    وقد أورعن في الكلل الجمالا

    When beauty saw the archers

    Who had excelled despite the wounds

  4. بكى أسفا وغودر في ديار

    خلال منالال يحكي الخلالا

    It wept with sorrow, hid in lands

    With winding valleys telling sorrows

  5. رمى اللَه الغواني ما رمتني

    وجنبني وجنبها الملالا

    May God throw stones at those who threw them at me

    And protect me and her from harm

  6. فقد غاردنني بيدي هواها

    تقلبني يميناً أو شمالا

    For she made me drunk with her love

    Turning me right and left

  7. وحسبي اللَه من زفرات وجد

    غداة البين تورثني السعالا

    My refuge is God from sighs and passion

    In mornings of separation that give me cough

  8. وفي أحداج آل بني هلال

    سرى قمرا وأشمس لي هلالا

    In the valleys of Bani Hilal

    A moon passed and a crescent dawned for me

  9. بدا بدراً وأدبر حقف رمل

    وغصنا ماس ثم رنا غزالا

    It appeared a full moon then disappeared behind dunes

    And a bending branch then a gazelle frolicked

  10. وأقبل يوم جد البين يذري

    سموط الدر مع دمع تلالا

    The day of parting came separating

    The flowing pearls with tears of the hills

  11. وخاض الحي للتوديع حتى

    كأن مطيهم شكت الرحالا

    The loved ones bid farewell until

    It was as if their mounts complained of the journey

  12. فرامق طرفه طرفي اختلاسا

    ولاصق خده خدي اغتيالا

    Her eyes glanced at mine stealthily

    And her cheek touched mine suddenly

  13. وسال الدر منثورا نفيسا

    على الخدين ينهمل انهمالا

    Pearls flowing generously

    On the cheeks cascading down

  14. وقال وقد أجر المرط تيها

    وأبدى لي من الغنج الدلالا

    She said, reigning in her camel wandered in the night

    Showing coquetry while taking leave

  15. ستلقاني إذا نزوى استقرت

    أو اشتملت على المجد اشتمالا

    You will meet me when settled after moving

    Or busy with glory and pride

  16. وأصبح أهلها رجلاً فريدا

    وإن كثروا على العدد الرمالا

    And people will find you a unique man

    Though many as grains of sand

  17. ألا من مبلغ عن ارتجالا

    نصيحات لدى نزوى رجالا

    If only an informant reaches men

    In the settled abode of Nuzuway advice

  18. بان الناس ما اجتمعوا رجالا

    ونسناسا إذا افترقوا حثالا

    That people when gathered are not men

    And lions when separated are carrion eaters

  19. وان النبل إلا النصل منه

    ولكن يسعد الريش النصالا

    That nobility is in the blade not the sheath

    Yet feathers make arrows graceful

  20. وأنتم قر علمتم ما علمتم

    وخضتم في الوغى بحراً سجالا

    You know what you know

    And plunged into fray a contested sea

  21. ولولا جمعكم للشمل قدما

    لما رمتم على حرب سعالا

    If not for your unity early on

    You would not have dared attack or war

  22. فكيف بغضكم طرفاً كليلا

    عن الأعدا وقد جاءت رجالا

    How can you turn away from foes

    When men have come attacking

  23. تشن عليكم الغارات شنا

    وتلتمس السهولة والجبالا

    Raiding you, seeking the plains and hills

    The enemy remains among and around you

  24. وما برح العدا فيكم ومنكم

    يجيدون النجائش والمقالا

    Plotting evil and slander

    Like a madman craving men

  25. تشهوا للمظالم والمخازي

    كمثل تهيمة شهت الرجالا

    Woe to you and those who admire you

    Obeying the lowly and mean

  26. فحاشاكم ومن يهوى هواكم

    تطيعون السفاسف والرذالا

    What truthful one tearfully complained

    Of Sura, its tears now flowing

  27. ألية صادق بسرى المطايا

    وقد طلحت ومنها الدمع سالا

    It turned away and aimed at it while protecting

    Irqal and Ighal in succession

  28. جفا وجوى أضر بها ونص

    وإرقال وإيغال توالى

    The beast hugged it with its forelegs

    And the dawn stripped it of its dusk

  29. تذرعت البهيم بأذرعيها

    وأجلى وشكها الصبح الكلالا

    It glanced at it then glanced away

    Distracted from it, it turned away

  30. وخاصت أعين منها وخاضت

    وزالت أنسع منها وذالا

    Bearing elegance to the virgin lands

    Traveling back and forth

  31. وقد حملت على الأكوار نجبا

    إلى الحرمين ترتقل ارتقالا

    Circling then praying then resting

    At Arafat asking to meet its end

  32. فطافت ثم صلت ثم راحت

    إلى عرفات تسأل أن تقالا

    In the plain the smooth riding horses

    With sturdy bodies like the mountains

  33. وبالجرد الجياد مسومات

    قبيبات الأياطل كالسعالي

    On their shoulders lions prowling

    Ferociously on the day of battle

  34. على صهواتها أسد ترامت

    بهم يوم الوغى تعطو القلالا

    If you do not reconsider what has plagued you

    And cease fighting and warring

  35. لئن لم تفكروا فيما عناكم

    وان تدعوا النزال ولا نزالا

    Armies of enemies will storm you

    Crowding the land covering the sands

  36. لتدهمكم جيوش للأعادي

    يضيق بها الفضا حكت الرمالا

    Serving you cups of forbidden wine

    Made permitted, one after another

  37. وتسقيكم كؤوسا في كؤوس

    حراما شربها صارت حلالا

    Your leaders have left you establishing

    Righteous traditions of glory

  38. مضت عنكم أوائلكم وسنت

    لكم سننا عفيفات جلالا

    They protected you with swords and vigilance

    And opinions where reason takes hold

  39. حموا عنكم بأسياف وسمر

    وآراء تركن الشم آلا

    They lived dignified connecting relations

    And died after fulfilling their word

  40. فعاشوا عيشة وهم كرام

    وماتوا بعد ما وصلوا الحبالا

    As for you after them, be women

    Sedentary, or if you wish, be men

  41. وأنتم بعدهم كونوا نساء

    خديرات وإن شئتم رجالا

    So either ignite the fires of war

    Or prepare funds for the dams

  42. فإما أججوا للحرب نارا

    وإما أهبوا للسد مالا

    Whoever accepts living in disgrace

    Has not heard those who spoke of honor

  43. ومن يرض المعيشة في هوان

    فلم يسمع لمن بالعز قالا
