قد خان سمعي وعيني خانها بصري

وشاب قلبي فما عتبى على شعري

My hearing and sight have betrayed me, my vision has failed me

And my heart grew old, so I have no blame for my poetry

خضلت شيبي وآمالي براهقةٍ

فصرت منها إلى الريعان والصغر

My old age and hopes were wasted in my youth

So I returned from it to adolescence and childhood

حلمي سفيه صغير السن محتقر

جهلي وذنبي عظيم كامل الكبر

My dream was foolish, young, despised

My ignorance and sin were great, full of enormity

سوفت في توبتي عصر الشباب فما

بعد المشيب إذا سوفتها عذري

I wasted the time of repentance in my youth, so

After old age, if I repent, what is my excuse?

كلم ندارأه في الحال مخترم

وما ارعويت وما أورعت بالنذر

I meet the decree as it comes, broken down

And I was not pious, nor did I fulfill my vows

أطيع نفسي وأعصى العاذلين لها

تبغي هداها وتهديني إلى الختر

I obey my soul and disobey those who advise it

It seeks its guidance but guides me to ruin

تقول لي النفس إغنم لذة حصلت

واتبع هواي على الباقي من العمر

The soul tells me: enjoy what you have attained

And follow my passions for the rest of your life

وما درت أن في عقبى لذاذتها

نغائصاً وردها حادٍ عن الصدر

It did not know that after its pleasures

Are plunging difficulties that depart from the chest

أعاذني اللَه من دهياء غاشمةٍ

عمايء تشعر إلا وهي في سقر

May God protect me from a treacherous soul

Blind that feels nothing until it is in Hell

للَه مننها ومن إبليس قائدها

ومن هواها أنا في الخوف والحذر

Thanks to God and from Iblis its guide

And from its passions - I am in fear and caution

وكل ما قدر الباري علي مضى

حتماً ولا ينفع المقدور في القدر

And all that the Creator has decreed will pass

Inevitably, and the decreed is no use against fate

لكن لي أملاً في اللَه أنعشني

من هوة القنط الموسوم بالبطر

But I have hope in God that revives me

From the abyss of despair branded with disappointment

ذنبي عظيم وعفو اللَه أعظم من

ذنبي ولا يتكافى الجم بالنزر

My sin is great but God's forgiveness is greater

Than my sin, and the ocean does not equate to a drop

أحب في اللَه فعل الصالحين ولم

أزل عليه وعنهم قد هفا قدري

I love in God the deeds of the righteous and have not

Ceased it and from them my fate has been determined

عسى بحيهم الرحمن يحشرني

في زمرة معهم من أفضل الزمر

Maybe by their love the Merciful will gather me

In a group with them from the best of groups

قد قيل من حب في الدنيا ولو حجرا

إلا ويحشر من حب من الحجر

It has been said whoever loves even a rock

In the world will be gathered with who he loved from the rock

عفواً وصفحاً وغفراناً ونيل مني

يا جابر الكسر أجبر بالرضى كسري

Forgiveness, pardon, absolution and gain from me

O Healer of fractures, heal my fracture with consent
