بمثوى مسقط طال الثواء

وملت صحبتي فيها النواء

In an abode, my journey lengthened,

And my companionship there jaded.

قصرت كأنني فيها أسيرٌ

ولا فادٍ لدي ولا فداء

It was as if I was captive,

With no ransom or sacrifice available.

وقد خافت جفوني النوم فيها

فليس كرى ولا عنها كراء

My eyes feared sleep in it,

It was not pleasant, nor was parting from it agreeable.

أروم بها خفاء السر لكن

لما قاسيته برح الخفاء

I intended to secretly confide in it, but

When I endured it, confidentiality fled.

نزلت بها الشتاء وما برحنا

إلى أن كاد ينسلخ الشتاء

Winter descended on it while we did not leave

Until winter nearly stripped away.

وبئس الدار داراً ليس فيها

لنازلها حمى أو أصدقاء

How wretched a home with no

Refuge for its lodger or loyal friends.

إلى ليلى الشريفة حن قلبي

وأنى لي على البعد اللقاء

My heart yearns for the noble Layla,

And how can I meet her from this distance?

وإن كتب الإله لنا بقاء

وصلناها إذا كتب البقاء

If God has written for us to remain,

We will join her, if survival is written.

سألنا اللَه توفيقاً إليها

فما من دون قدرته وقاء

We ask God for success in reaching her,

For apart from His power there is no protection.

وإن دفع الشقاء فإن وصلنا

بإذن اللَه زال بها الشقاء

And if hardship is averted, and we join her

By God's will, hardship will disappear through her.

أيا رباه إن جواء ليلى

كحبك عندنا نعم الجواء

O Lord, Layla's affection

Is, to us, most soothing balm.

وداء الشوق زاد بنا إليها

ومنظرها لنا فهوو الدواء

The malady of yearning for her grows in us

And the sight of her is our remedy.

يبيت ودادنا يسري إليها

كما تسري المولولة الرحاء

Our love steals quietly to her

As the gentle night breeze flows.

أيا رباه دعوة مستغيث

أجل عتاد نصرته الدعاء

O Lord, the plea of one desperate,

Surely, supplication is the aid of his call.

أيا من لا يخيب ظن راج

إليك إليك قادني الرجاء

O You who never disappoint one hopeful,

To You, to You has hope led me.

فهبني ما أشاء لوصل ليلى

فإنك قادر فيما تشاء

So grant me what I wish to join Layla,

For You are capable of what You will.
