1. فؤاد بنيران المصاب مفأد

    وعين سماها مبرق المزن مرعد

    A heart afflicted, its passion aflame

    An eye called a flash of lightning, thunderous and loud

  2. وجسم براه الحزن كالبري بالمدى

    فصار كمثل السلك في الحرب تسرد

    A body which sadness made bare like an open plain

    Became like a wire in war snaking about

  3. طريحاً على فرش الضنى لم يزل لقىً

    ولي كبد حرى وطرف مسهد

    Lying prostrate on the bed of grief, ceaselessly suffering

    My liver burned, and my eyelid shed tears

  4. وأنة قد قدت ضلوعي وزفرة

    تكاد بروحي للخياشيم تصعد

    My ribs almost cracked, and my sigh

    Nearly carried my soul to my nostrils

  5. وقد عبدت مني الرزايا خلائقاً

    وعهدي بها من قبل ذا لا تعبد

    Hardships have sculpted creatures out of me

    And my pact with them dates back before those who worship

  6. وكنت أمرأ جلدا على كل حادث

    فقد صار لي أعدى الأعادي التجلد

    I used to be a man, steadfast against every misfortune

    Yet now, even the most patient of enemies perplex me

  7. لكل أناس سيد يقتدي به

    وإِني لأهل الفقد والحزن سيد

    Everyone has a master they emulate

    And I am the master of those bereaved and woeful

  8. لديّ عجيب أَن أُرى متبسماً

    وما سرني إِلا البكا والتوجد

    It is strange that I appear smiling

    When only weeping and anguish delight me

  9. فليت فمي إِن أَكثر السن ضاحكا

    سروراً يرى كالطعنة الرمح أدرد

    If only when my years advanced and my mouth

    Laughed, it appeared like the stab of a spear

  10. وقد لذت الأحزان عندي لأنها

    غدت ديدنا حيث الأَسى يتجدد

    Sorrows have become sweet to me because they

    Are now my custom, as grief is made new

  11. وقد أَتلقى الناس والعقل عازب

    ولم أدر إصداري من حيث أَورد

    People and sanity have abandoned me

    And I know not where my utterances flow

  12. مصائب شتى جمعت لي مصيبة

    وعدة حزن أكثفت لا تعدد

    Various woes have gathered into one calamity for me

    And many griefs have accumulated, beyond counting

  13. على تالد الأيام لي طارف الأَسى

    وفي كل يوم لي من الحزن مشهد

    With the succession of days, scenes of sorrow are mine

    And in each day, grief has a spectacle for me

  14. كأن الليالي طالبتني بثأرها

    وقد أدركته حيث مني يوجد

    As if the nights demanded vengeance from me

    And attained it wherever they found me

  15. وإن دام هذا الحزن عندي قليله

    فقدت مع المفقود من حيث يفقد

    If this grief remains with me a little longer

    I will perish with the lost one, wherever one perishes

  16. وهيهات لا حزن كحزني لأنني

    أَقوم به من غير عقل وأَقعد

    Alas! No grief is like my grief, for I rise in it

    Senseless, and sit senseless

  17. ألا بكر الناعي بكاملة الحجى

    وطاهرة الأَعراق وَالعُرض أمجد

    O Bakr, the first to lament the perfect one of virtue

    Pure, chaste, of honored lineage

  18. كريمة قوم ما بها عضُّ هجنة

    يقدسها صيت ومجد ومحتد

    A noble woman of a people in whom is no flaw

    Sanctified by reputation, glory, and prestige

  19. حصاناً كسا أَخلاقها رونق الحيا

    وما هي إِلا في الملمات جلمد

    A steed whose character was adorned by the splendor of life

    Yet she was frozen in calamities

  20. خديراً تمنى النجم اسقاط لفظها

    ويسقط إجلالاً لها ويمجد

    A full moon which the star wished to eclipse with its setting

    Setting in deference to her and in homage

  21. تبيت خميص البطن غرثى من الطوى

    وجاراتها في عيشها الرغد رغد

    She slept satiated while her neighbors

    In their lives, enjoyed ease and plenty

  22. عقيم من الفحشا ولود من الثنا

    سبوق إِلى الحسنى لها الفضل واليد

    Barren of scandal, fertile of praise

    Foremost in good deeds by her preference and hand

  23. بقية نسوان مضت لسبيلها

    فلا دهرها يرجى ولا هي توجد

    Upholder of the true religion, trusting and dependent on it

    As she professed and leaned upon it

  24. هي الزوجة المعوان في السخط والرضى

    وفي الدين والدنيا وجدك مسعد

    She used to fear for me before losing me

    And pray that I remain for my children and miss them

  25. إِذا حلت الأَضياف بالليل ساحتي

    ونام على لين الفراش المزند

    She wore the gray hair of time since she wore me

    The water was never murky, nor life gloomy

  26. تطوف على خفض القدور ورفعها

    وجاراتها فوق المطارح هجد

    My days with her were verdant, my promises to her sincere

    My dream with her ripe, my cheek delicate

  27. وتملي جفانا كالجواني لضيفها

    ثريداً وذو الاحسان للضيف يثرد

    When the first to lament her cried, it was as if

    For Kab bin Zuhair I moaned, distraught over her loss

  28. وكانت على الدين الحنيفي حافظاً

    على أَنها فيه تنص وتسند

    No mother ostrich has harbored an unhatched egg

    And remained at the Zand valley, grazing and quenching thirst

  29. وكانت على فقدي تحاذر قبلها

    وتدعو بأن أبقى لنسلي وتفقد

    Until the spittle of the sun trickled over it

    And the time came for the dappled chick to emerge

  30. لبست قشيب الدهر منذ لبستها

    فلا الماء مغبر ولا العيش أَنكد

    She circled below it, inhaling the flowers below it

    And glancing here and there, wavering

  31. زماني بها غض وعودي بها يد

    وحلمي بها كهل وخدي أمرد

    When she came below the nest and turned around

    To a hunter approaching stealthily to pounce

  32. ولما نعى الناعي بها فكأنني

    لكعب بن سلمى وهي في الفقد أيرد

    She was not alerted until his blood poured

    As she clawed and pecked him viciously

  33. فما أم خسف أودعته خميلة

    وظلت بروض الزند ترعىوتورد

    Then she did not stop circling his nest

    Raising her head to the sky, resilient

  34. إِلى أن لعاب الشمس رقرق دونه

    وحان لها وقت الرضاع المعربد

    When night came, she began tracing his shape

    Sinking down for a while, then rising in alarm

  35. خطت دونه تستنشق الزهر دونه

    وتنظر من هنا وهناً تلدد

    More intensely than I lamented the day the funeral proceeded

    To a grave dug in soft soil

  36. فلما أتت دون الكناس تلفتت

    إِلى قانص للخلف يدنو ويخلد

    A neighbor to a people without any connection between them

    With no roots in the lifeless soil

  37. وما راعها إلا ترشح دمه

    وقد نزعت فيه الحوايا وأكبد

    They say to me, “How blessed is Thursday!”

    For the buyer, blissful and nothing is more blissful

  38. فما برحت تلتاع حول كناسه

    وترفع رأساً للسماء وتصمد

    If Thursday passes me by, and its night

    My drink will be sweet and refreshing

  39. ولما أتاها الليل باتت تقصه

    تغور له طوراً وطوراً فتنجد

    If a funeral passes over the necks

    I will be confounded whether to grieve or moan

  40. بأوجد مني يوم سارت جنازة

    إِلى لحد قبر بالذروب يمهد

    If my eye sees a stranger, and Hamza

    And his brothers around me, lamenting

  41. مجاورة قوماً ولا وصل بينهم

    وليس لهم في هامد الترب عود

    They say, “Tell us, after our mother

    Who will we resort to, and make our destination?”

  42. يقولون لي يوم الخميس مبارك

    له المشتري سعد وما فيه أسعد

    I exert my soul to mourn with them out of gloom

    While they, in souls, are more exerting in gloom

  43. إذا مر لي يوم الخميس وليله

    تمرر شربي وهو عذب مبرد

    I say to them, “Life is an appetite

    But it inevitably ends with the passing days”

  44. وإِن عرضت فوق الرقاب جنازة

    تحيرت أَو أَني على الحزن أَوجد

    “Everything has its time, so it has passed on

    And there is no escape from its appointed day”

  45. وإِن نظرت عيني غريباً وحمزة

    وإخوتهم حولي وهم يتوجدوا

    “Wealth, family, and homes are only illusions

    And the house is only what its builder made lasting”

  46. يقولون لي قل من لنا بعد أمنا

    ومن غيرها نأوي إليها ونقصد

    “Exercise patience, for patience is a garment

    Most splendid, wherever it is found”

  47. أجود بنفسي في عزاهم كآبة

    وهم بالنفوس للكآبة أجود

    “Your mother is watered in her grave each hour

    By the gentle rain of late nights, clouded”

  48. أَقول لهم إِن الحياة شهية

    ولكن على مر الجديدين تنفد

    “May Allah bestow prayers upon her after Muhammad

    For the best prayer is that in which Muhammad was specified”

  49. وكل له وقت فما عنه فمرحل

    وليس له عن يومه الفرد مفرد

  50. وما المال والأهلون إِلا تعلة

    وما الدار إِلا ما قناها المخلد

  51. عليك بحسن الصبر فالصبر حلة

    معظمد المقدار من حيث توجد

  52. سقى أمكم في قبرها كل ساعة

    من المزن رجاس العشيات مُلبد

  53. وصلى عليها الله بعد محمد

    فخير صلاة خص فيها محمد
