لا طارف عاد عندي لا ولا تلد

في جدة فبلي يا جدة جدد

I have no joy, no children to delight me

In Jeddah – so farewell to you, O Jeddah!

والمرء إن برئت من ماله يده

فما له أبداً في العالمين يد

When a man’s wealth fails, his hand cut off,

He has no place forever in either world.

ما ضاق صدر الفتى من ضيق ثورته

إلا وضاقت على أخلاقه البلد

Never did a young man’s frustration make

His homeland too confining but his nature narrowed it.

واحر كبد غير أسر غربته

والجسم يبلى إذا ما حرت الكبد

Hot liver, not chains, burns the exile,

And the body decays when the liver grows hot.

إن أرقد الليل خالي البال بت على

مضاضة البين كالملوع أرتعد

Sleepless I lie, my thoughts all anguish

From the pain of separation, tossing like one diseased.

وكيف يملأ عيناً بالكرى رجل

بجدة لا صديق لا ولا تلد

How can a man’s eyes be filled with tears

In Jeddah where he has neither friend nor child?

أنا الغريب غدت لي جدة وطنا

كأنها اللحد ما لي عند ملتحد

I the stranger have made Jeddah my home

As if it were my grave – no kin waits for me.

كأنني يونس لي جدة جعلت

حوتاً فلست بها أيدي ولا أعد

As if I were Jonah with Jeddah for whale

I have neither hands nor means of escape.

أحود كالطير فوق الوكر يرفعه

غيم من البين مسبوقاً به النكد

I moan like a bird circling its ravaged nest,

Borne on a cloud of woe, wrapped in misery.

خان المعينان لي صبر وحسن عزي

وأوفيا المتعبان الحزن والسهد

Patience and composure have betrayed me,

While sorrow and grief remain true.

لا حيلة لغريب الدار غير شجى

وعبرة وكفت في الخد تنسرد

An exile has no choice but grief

And weeping, with tears flooding his cheek.

ما حال ناء عن الأوطان مبتعد

وعنه ليلى نأت والصبر والجلد

What is the state of one far from his homeland,

Parted from his beloved, needing patience and fortitude?

له حنين إلى أوطانه ولها

وديدنن في هواها لم يزل ودد

He yearns for his home, she for her love –

Her passion for him always longing.

لا صبر لي عن لقا ليلى وإن بعدت

والحب سيان إن يدنو ويبتعد

I cannot be patient, far from my love,

Love is the same, near or distant.

وكيف أصبر عمن لا يلم على

قلبي لها بعد أحكام النوى سمد

How can I be patient with one who does not

Understand my heart, now my vows are binding?

مسائل الحب فيها وهي عائلة

وقسم شوقي إليها فهو مطرد

Love’s questions are family matters,

My passion for her always flows.

وكل شيء له عقبى إلى أمد

وما لحبي وولوالي لها أمد

Everything has its time ‘til its end –

But my love and devotion have no end.

لي زفرة في هواها غير ساكنة

وفي خد ودي لمجرى أدمعي خدد

I sigh ceaselessly for her love,

With tears forever streaming down my cheek.

عشقتها وعذاري ما له شعر

ونهت فيها وشعري كله جعه

I loved her while I was still a beardless youth,

And when my beard grew, still I loved only her.
