1. هو الرزء حتى خص ريش القوادم

    وخص الخوافي في جناح المكارم

    He was the weft of the fabric until it lacked thread,

    And it lacked the fringe in the wing of generosity,

  2. وافقأ عين المجد حتى تغورت

    وأعمى قلوب الواجبات اللوازم

    And he blinded the eye of glory until it was lost,

    And made blind the hearts from necessary duties,

  3. وهدم بيت السؤدد العز والعلا

    وحكم المنايا هادم أي هادم

    And demolished the house of generosity and honor,

    And fate, the destroyer of any destroyer, ruled,

  4. وأثر في شهب السماء وفي الحصا

    وفي الأرض تأثير الرياح الصيارم

    And he affected the meteors in the sky, and on the pebbles,

    And on the earth, the effect of piercing winds,

  5. بنفسيَ ميتا غير ميت وإن عدا

    عسيلا بتوكيف الدموع السواجم

    With my soul dead but not dead though he is gone

    Nostalgically shedding copious tears

  6. فما مقلة شحت عليه بدمعها

    ولا عاش قلب للأسى غير لازم

    So no eyelid was stingy with its tears for him,

    Nor did any heart live except in sadness for him,

  7. كوى حزنه الأكباد كيا فلم يزل

    حريقاً بأثناء الحشا والحيازم

    His sorrow seared livers however much, and did not cease

    To be a conflagration in the thickets and yards,

  8. وما الفقد في كل الملوك كفقده

    ففي الفقد هم منه كفقد البهائم

    And no loss among all the kings was like losing him

    For in losing him they were like losing cattle,

  9. أبا مالك من للمعالي يشيدها

    خلافك مذ أثبتها بالدعائم

    O Abu Malik, who will rebuild the glories

    After you established them on pillars?

  10. فما فقدت مذ كنت أملاك حمير

    ولا لسواك الحمد عند المواسم

    Since I owned camels I never lost like losing you -

    Except you - praise at the seasons,

  11. أبا العرب الزاكي ابن بلعرب الفتى اب

    ن صلت المحيا ذا العموم العماعم

    O Arabs’ harvest, pure son of Bal'arab the noble lad

    Son who joined lives, whose eras mingled!

  12. ويا طاهر الأعراض والخيم والجدا

    وصافي السجايا والنديم المنادم

    And O you pure of honor, and tents, and munificence,

    And sincere of nature, and boon companion at the wine!

  13. ويا قائد الخيل العتاق لوفده

    ويا مغنياً من ماله كل عادم

    And O leader of the honored horses of his delegation,

    And O you who sings with his money to every guest!

  14. ويا من له المري في الحكم طائع

    ومن دونه في الحلم قيس بن عاصم

    And O you whom obedience serves in judgment,

    And under whom is judicious Qays ibn 'Asim in wisdom!

  15. يبدد جيش الخصم تدبير رأيه

    فعاش ولم تلق له من مخاصم

    Your scheme scatters the enemy’s army,

    So he lived and met no hostility,

  16. كذاك سيوف الرأي أمضى ضريبة

    وأحسم من حسم السيوف الصوارم

    Just so do the swords of opinion pay a poll tax

    And decide more decisively than sharpened swords,

  17. أبا مالك أبكيك ما عشت باقياً

    بكاء المعالي أو عوالي اللهاذم

    O Abu Malik, I will weep for you as long as I live

    The weeping of glories or lofty peaks,

  18. وتبكيك هجن يعملات إلى العلا

    ويبكيك حُزناً كل أجرد صائم

    And maidens of the highlands will weep you

    In sadness, and every fasting monk,

  19. ويبكيك ضيف آخر الليل طارق

    طوى الكشح سعياً عن لذيذ المطاعم

    And the guest will weep you at the end of night knocking

    Having folded the cloak seeking delicious food,

  20. وتبكيك سادات أسى وقبائل

    وكل حصان الذيل غيداء ناعم

    And the lords of sorrow and tribes will weep you

    And every horse with a smooth, beautiful tail,

  21. فمن واكف دمعاً على صحن خده

    ومن هاتك جيبا عليك ولاطم

    For who can restrain tears on the dish of his cheek

    And who spare his pocket for you and reproach himself?

  22. وواعز لو يجدي البكا فيك أوبة

    بكينا وعضينا أصابع نادم

    If only weeping could avail you, O Waez,

    We would weep and bite regretful fingers,

  23. قضى اللَه فينا بالأسى فيك بعد ما

    قضى فيك هذا وهي قدرة حاكم

    God decreed sadness for us in you after

    He so decreed in you - such is the decree of the Omnipotent,

  24. رضينا رضينا بالقضاء وكونه

    بأنف إذا لم ترض بالعدل راغم

    We are content, content with the decree though it be

    Through coercion, if you do not accept justice, imposed,

  25. سبيل الردى هذا مليك متوج

    وسوقة قوم أو قروم قماقم

    This is the path of doom, O garlanded King,

    And the bier of a folk, or clans with snub noses,

  26. رأينا عظيم الشأن من أسرعوا به

    إلى قبره ذي النازلات العظائم

    We saw the great one hastened in it

    To his tremendous, momentous grave,

  27. أبا مالك إن مت مت مكرما

    وبعدك قد أبقيت رب المكارم

    O Abu Malik, if you died, you died honored,

    And after you, you left the Lord of Honors,

  28. فما مات من كان المليك محمد

    خليفته بالغيث نتج الغمائم

    For no one dies whose caliph was Muhammad

    From whom clouds drizzle when he makes them rain,

  29. وإن كان ذا سن صغير فإنه

    كبير متى يدهى بدهياء حالم

    And if his age be young, yet he is

    Grown when imagination matures in a dreamer,

  30. يدبر أمر الملك طفلا هرمعا

    بتدبير كهل رابط الجأش حازم

    A child manages the kingdom’s affairs sagely

    With the management of a steadfast elder who grasps firmness,

  31. أبا فارس إن الرجا فيك صادق

    بأنك أرسى من هضاب العواصم

    O horseman, hope in you is true

    That you made steadfast like the crags of highlands,

  32. وأصبر من سمع الذئاب على القسا

    واثبت حزماً من ظفار القشاعم

    And more patient than wolves listening to bowstrings

    And steadier in resolution than Omani lions!

  33. عزاء لقد أصبحت فينا خليفة

    فكن ساتراً عنا عوار الحرائم

    Consolation - you have become for us in succession

    So veil our shameful deeds from us,

  34. وكن نائباً عنا إذا ناب نائب

    وكن حاملاً عنا ثقيل المغارم

    And be our deputy when a deputy succeeds,

    And bear from us the heavy trusts,

  35. فما ذل حر عز بالعز جاره

    ولا عز من أدناه مرعى اللوائم

    For no free man’s honor is debased if his neighbor is honored

    Nor is glorified one brought down to pasture on blame,

  36. وما ساد من لا جاد أو كان صافحا

    بحلم على الجاني برقة حاشم

    And none gain mastery who do not give generously

    Or extend a hand in wisdom to the offender, gently covering,

  37. لنا ولكم يا آل صلت من العزا

    على الهالك الماضي سهام المقاسم

    For us and for you, O family of Sult, is consolation

    For the deceased, arrows shared from quivers,

  38. فنحن وأنتم روح جسم مدى المدى

    بألطاف مخدوم وخدمة خادم

    For we and you are the spirit of a body forever and ever

    Through the subtleties of the Protected Lord and service of servants

  39. فلا تلزموا في الحزن من فقد هالك

    نفوسكم ما لم يكن غير لازم

    So do not oblige yourselves in grief for a deceased

    Soul, as long as it remains unnecessary,

  40. فكل ابن أنثى هالك وابن هالك

    ولا سالما تلقى ولا إبن سالم

    For every son of woman dies, and son of deceased,

    And you will meet no peace, nor son of peace,

  41. سقى قبر مولانا الحيا كل ليلة

    سجالا سجالاً من سواري الغمائم

    His grave was watered every night with

    Cascades cascading from the clouds.
