1. أعد نظراً في السرب بالرمل من حزوي

    وجالس إذا كررت للرشا الأحوى

    I advise looking back at the herd in Hazwi’s sands

    And sitting if you repeat the calling for al-Ahwa

  2. ولا تطر شيا من أحاديث عالج

    وإن كان لا يخفى بناظرك الطروي

    And you fly not anything from hopeless talk

    And if your teary eyes don’t miss the target

  3. فحولك من أبناء ازدٍ شنوءة

    أسود إذا سيموا الوغى كلهم ألوى

    Your stallions are from Izd Shanu’a’s sons

    Who if war is kindled are all bending their bows

  4. يطوفون بالحي الحلال وإن حدا

    بظعنهم الحادي حدواً عرفهم حدوا

    They tour the abode of halal and if

    The guiders limit them, they know their limit

  5. إذا ما تناجوا في السريرة بينهم

    أذاعت ظباهم عن ظباهم لك النجوى

    If they confide among themselves in secret

    Their young female camels spread to you their whispers

  6. وإن زرتهم غب السرى فهمو غنى

    متى ما أردوا في عيونهم العفوا

    And if you visit them absent from company

    Whenever they want, in their eyes are amnesty

  7. تبيت لهم نار من القطر تلتظي

    إذا القدر في بطنانهم دسع الأروا

    A fire from drizzle is lit for them

    When the pot in their center kindles embers

  8. هم البدو إلا في الفؤادي حضر

    ومن حبهم أحببت لو هجروا البدوا

    They are bedouin except in my heart urban

    And from love of them, I’d love if they shun the bedouin life

  9. هم الحي حي اللَه من حي دارهم

    وإن بقيت للركب من بعدهم شلوى

    They are the life, the life from their abode’s life

    And if I stay for the caravan after them, miserable

  10. وأبغضت من حبي لهم يانع الأشى

    ومن أجلهم أهوى السماوة والصعوى

    And from love of them, I hated the delicate gazelle

    And for their sake, I love wild plains and mountains

  11. وسقيا ليوم رحت فيه مخادعاً

    وقد سقت الأجفان للغرفة المحوى

    My salute the day I went to them a guest

    And my eyelids quenched for the house to shelter

  12. أنادي سعاداً ودعينا سعادةً

    وأعلو بصوتي وهي تعرفه علوى

    I called out happiness, and we called out happiness

    And I elevate my voice, and it recognizes elevation

  13. أغالط بالغطو البليغ لكي أرى

    مبالغ ما أهوى وإن عرفوا الغطوى

    I flatter with eloquent flattery to see

    Exaggerations of what I love, though they know flattery

  14. وأحلى الهوى ما رحت فيه مغازلاً

    أرى غير ما أهوى لنيل الذي أهوى

    And the sweetest love I went into, flirting

    I see other than what I love to gain what I love

  15. وأبلغ ما ألقى من الحب خلوةٌ

    أرى الناس قلباً من فنون الهوى خلوى

    And the most eloquent love I meet, a tryst

    Where I see people a heart from love’s arts, intimate

  16. أسأل عن أهل الحمى جؤذر اللوى

    وعن ساكني حزوى ظبى قطنت بهوى

    I ask about the people of passion, passion twisting

    And residents of Hazwi, a gazelle I harbored passion for

  17. وليل كعين الظبي كلت نجومه

    وبثت إلى الفجرين من ليلها الشكوى

    And a night whose stars are all consumed

    And it complained to the two dusks from its night, complaining

  18. كأن ثرياه على الرأس حاسد

    يصور بطرف ما تخال به خطوى

    As if its Pleiades on the head, envious

    Imagining with a wink what it devised, scheming

  19. تظن سهيلاً أعيس الشول حافراً

    ويطوي الدراري وهي عائدةٌ تطوى

    You’d think Suhayl, leader of Canis Major, a hoof

    And folds the sheets as it returns, folding

  20. درعت به النزوى الحزوى ولم أجد

    لمن حلها نزوى وما لي بهم نزوى

    I shielded it with yearning, but found

    No one to yearn for, and I have with them no yearning

  21. طرقتهمو والركب حول فنائهم

    لهم أعين منشوحةٍ ملئت غفوا

    I knocked on their door, and the caravan around their yard

    With wide eyes filled with slumber

  22. وسادهمو أيدي النياق وأيدهم

    على حذر منها بطرف النزى تلوى

    And their pillows are the palms’ trunks, and their palms

    Vigilant, twisting from them with the palm’s edge

  23. وباتت من هنا وهنا صوالياً

    إذا لمحت من نحو كاظمةٍ خفوى

    And they spent the night here and there in groups

    If they spotted from Najmiah’s direction something hidden

  24. دخلت خبا عليا وقد اطها الكرى

    وقد بلني النادي ولم أمتش الحنوى

    I entered arid highlands after the mixed company left

    And the caller called me, but I didn’t fulfill his call

  25. فقالت من الساري إلينا وطارقاً

    خباناً ووافانا على نية عموى

    She said from the treetop, to us and knocking

    Deceiving us and reaching us with aimless intent

  26. فقلت لها بالي السلو متيم

    وشلو الهوى لم يستطع في الهوى سلوى

    I said my night is dark, and the passion’s night

    Is miserable, unable to find in passion respite

  27. تلوت زبوراً من هوى قادة الهوى

    فكنت ولو كانوا لهم قادةً تلوى

    I recited scripture from the passion of the passion guides

    And I’d be, even if they had for them guides, reciting

  28. وقد كنت قبل اليوم أعذل من هوى

    ومذ ذقته عذلت من في الهوى أهوى

    And I was, before today, criticizing passion

    And since I tasted it, I criticize those in passion I love

  29. وعنفت من في الحب أصبح والهاً

    ومذ رمته أعجب من لم يمت شجوى

    And I rebuked those in love who became heedless

    And since I threw it, I’m amazed by those who didn’t die of fervor

  30. أنا الداله المضني ومن أنكر الضنى

    فشاهده جسمي بلا خبرٍ يروى

    I’m the lovesick exhausted, and whoever denies my misery

    Let him witness my body without a story healing

  31. سرائر دائي في فؤادي خفيةً

    ويودع قلبي بعضها المقالة الملوى

    Secrets of my sickness in my heart hidden

    And entrusts my heart some of them twisted in speech

  32. وإني لذو جسمٍ كخصر عليةٍ

    وقلب كمثل الردف في الثقل أو أقوى

    And I’m indeed of a body like a tall palm tree’s trunk

    And a heart like a rump in heaviness, or stronger

  33. بليت بلى أطلالها إذ ذهلتها

    ولم أسقها دمعي فأقوى كما تقوى

    I remained in its ruins when it neglected

    And didn’t water it with my tears, so it got stronger

  34. ومجهولة الأعلام طامسةً الصوى

    بأجوازها ضلت وقد حدت الحدوى

    Unknown marks, obscure voices

    Lost in its expanses, and it determined limits

  35. متيهه الساري من السحب إن سرى

    تخيله يغتاب في قمة السروى

    Misguided the treetop if it goes

    Imagining blaming on the pinnacle of the cypress

  36. ويقتبس الركبان نار سهيلها

    بأكفافهم خلوه من كثب كفوى

    And the travelers light Suhayl’s fire

    With their palms empty of hoarding palms

  37. تضل القطا فيه أفاحيص بيضها

    فتنبث في رجوى أفاحيصها الكنوى

    The wild cats in it loses its kittens

    So they scatter in its valleys, their concealed kittens

  38. وتسمع للجنان فيه تعظمظا

    وينسى قهيب القلب في جوزها الرجوى

    And you hear in it the camels’ gurgling

    And the heart forgets its palpitation in its pearl’s sanctuary

  39. قطعت وقد قالت بها الريم في الربا

    وقد نزت الحرباء في عودها نزوى

    It cuts while the sands in the dwelling said

    And the warblers dwelled in their abode, dwelling

  40. ومجت به الشمس اللعاب فخلته

    نتايج مزن يمتهي الحصب والمروى

    And it filled with the sun the ponds, leaving them

    Nataij’s leftovers, the pebbles and vegetation finish off

  41. بمفزة قتل المرافق جلعد

    كأن بين شدقيها قد التهمت جروا

    With the killing of the companion humpbacked

    As if between its jaws, it devoured a scabbed camel

  42. تعالى عليها الني حتى كأنها

    وقد لغبت من حبوها تشبه الجهوى

    Drool climbs up on it, until it’s as if

    It’s drunk from its love, resembling the sticky

  43. أمط بها التهجير كل عشيةٍ

    وأذابها المسرى فأضحت به حجوى

    I erased with estrangement every evening

    And the tumor melted it, so it became with it, melted

  44. وخاضت لأولى الليل حتى إذا بدا

    لها الصبح حاضت وهي تبكي لها شجوى

    And it waded the night’s first part until dawn showed

    For it, and it waded while crying for it, crying

  45. تظن هوادي الفجر ماء لترتوي

    فما برحت تنضو إليه ولم تروى

    It thinks the dawn’s streams are water to quench its thirst

    But it never ceased wading to it and hasn’t quenched

  46. ومنهدم الأعضاء طلحب ماؤه

    وبنت عليه العنكبوت له مأوى

    Its limbs are ruined, its water turbid

    And the spider built on it, its abode

  47. كأن مساحيب النضانض حوله

    مجر رماح الحي في الماقط الألوى

    As if the clouds of starlings around it

    A flooding of the living’s spears in the twisting thorns

  48. كأن عليه الريش من كل جانب

    حراب جلاها صيق للوغى جلوى

    As if on it feathers from every side

    Fighting of warriors, for war a twisting cry

  49. به يبحث الضرغام يحمي وروده

    ومن حوله السيدان من ظمأ نشوى

    In it the ostrich searches protecting its roses

    And around it the predators from thirst, taken to drink

  50. وردت به والنجم في القعر راكد

    كصاحب رحلي قاعد يفعهم الدلوى

    I returned in it, and the star stagnant in the depth

    Like my companion sitting sipping the bucket

  51. وخطب من الدنيا عظيم لقفته

    بخطب وبلوى من يدري جرعت بلوى

    And it lectured from life profoundly inspired

    With lectures and inspiration – who knows if it sipped inspiration

  52. وأفضل ذخر للمعاد ادخرته

    مديحي رسول اللَه بين الملا يروى

    And the best treasure I hoarded for the Return

    Is my praise of the Messenger between scholars circulated

  53. وإني لأرجو بالمديح لأحمد

    بلوغ المنى والنيل للغياة القصوى

    And I surely hope with praise of Ahmad

    To attain wishes and gain the most lofty salvations

  54. ولو كنت كلي ألسناً وبديهة

    وعمرت تعمير الزمان فلم أقو

    And even if I were all tongues and eloquence

    And lived the age’s lifetime, I wouldn’t

  55. لما رمت أحصي عشر معشار فضله

    ولا عشر عشر العشر منه ولم أقوى

    Aim to count a tenth of his virtues

    Not a tenth of a tenth, and I wouldn’t be strongest

  56. نبي الهدى لولاه لم تخلق الورى

    ولم تكن الدنيا ولم تمطر الأنوا

    O prophet of guidance, without him the world wouldn’t be created

    And the life wouldn’t exist and rain wouldn’t pour

  57. لولاه ما كانت جنان ولا لظى

    ولا كتب تتلى ولا قصص تروى

    Without him there wouldn’t be gardens or blazing hellfire

    Nor scripts recited, nor stories narrated

  58. ولولاه ما كانت بحار ولا سمت

    سماء ولن ترسى ثبير ولا رضوى

    And without him there wouldn’t be seas, nor would

    A sky pave the way, nor would a meadow make comfortable

  59. ولولاه لم ترسل إلى الكتب رسلها

    ولا نور لولاه الواضح الأضوا

    And without him his books wouldn’t send messengers

    And without him the luminous enlightenment

  60. بمولده قد أخمدت نار فارس

    وإيوان كسرى خر وانهد من علوى

    With his birth, Persia’s fire was put out

    And Kisra’s palace fell and his elevation collapsed

  61. تحطمت الأصنام مذ شاع ذكره

    وحلت على نسرٍ بمبعثه البلوى

    The idols were destroyed when news of him spread

    And the eagle landed with his mission, landing

  62. وحياه بالتسليم عود وظبية

    وسبح في كفيه صلد الحصى يطوى

    The poles and gazelles greeted him in submission

    And the firm rocky ground in his palms prayed, folding

  63. وشق له البدر المنير كما جرى

    براحته للقوم ماء لكي تروى

    And the shining full moon split as it occurred

    With his palm for the people water so they drink

  64. وقد ظللته في القفار غمامةً

    ورأد الضحى بالقوم يهبو الحصى هبوا

    And a cloud shaded him in the arid expanse

    And the midmorning deflected from the people the pebbles, deflecting

  65. وكم آيةٍ تتلو على إثر آيةٍ

    حصى الرمل وهي لن تحتصي طروى

    And how many signs follow each other

    Pebbles of sand, never to be counted

  66. عليك سلام اللَه يا خير شافعٍ

    بيومٍ به السبع السموات قد تطوى

    Upon you Allah’s peace O best intercessor

    On a day the seven heavens will fold

  67. عليك سلام اللَه يا خير مرسل

    وخير نبيٍّ أكشفت عنده النجوى

    Upon you Allah’s peace O best messenger sent

    And best prophet, revelations unveiled for him

  68. عليك سلام اللَه يا منبع الهدى

    ويا ذروة العليا ويا معدنن الجدوى

    Upon you Allah’s peace O source of guidance

    And O peak most high, O essence of purpose

  69. عليك سلام اللَه يا خير سيدٍ

    غدا في عداد الأنبيا كلها قدوى

    Upon you Allah’s peace, best chief

    To the prophets altogether a role model

  70. عليك سلام اللَه يا من إذا لجا

    إلى نحوه الحاني فيرفده العفوى

    Upon you Allah’s peace, you who when

    A desperate soul comes to you, you show kindness

  71. أمولاي رجٍ منك جئت شفاعةً

    وغفرانن ذنبٍ ما جنته بنو حوا

    My Master I came to you seeking intercession

    And forgiving a sin I didn’t commit deliberately

  72. أمولاي ذنب لو يحل بكبكبٍ

    لكب وبعض منه رض به رضوى

    My Master a sin, if it afflicted the kernel,

    It would fold, and some accept folding

  73. أمولاي بي داءٌ وأنت طبيبه

    وما البرء والصفح والعفوى

    My Master in me is illness, and You are its healer

    And not wellness, pardoning, and kindness

  74. أمولاي إني مستجيرٌ بقربكم

    وقد أملتني بالرضى منكم الرجوى

    My Master, I take refuge in your nearness

    And I hope for acceptance from You, hoping

  75. أمولاي إني مستميح نوالكم

    بحسن قوافٍ فيك لم تعرف الإقوا

    My Master I ask for Your gift

    With a good face, never knowing denial

  76. أمولاي إني واقفٌ عند بابكم

    وهذي يدي من بحركم تمتح الدلوى

    My Master I stand at Your door

    With my hand from Your sea drawing buckets

  77. أمولاي غفراناً وستراً ونائلاً

    لجان وراج قد مضى عمره سهوى

    My Master, forgiveness, veil, and attainment

    For someone who passed his life erring

  78. أمولاي إني قد ثويت بقربكم

    وطوبى لجان رام قربكم مثوى

    My Master I resided in your nearness

    And happy is one who desired your nearness a dwelling

  79. فإني رأيت العرب تحفر بالحصى

    فتمنع جنب المستجير من الأسوى

    For I saw the Arabs digging with pebbles

    Preventing a seeker’s side from harm

  80. وقد قال ظني عنك والحب رائدي

    بأنك لا ترضى على جارك الأزوى

    And my assumption of You and love leading me

    Is that You don’t accept harm upon Your neighbor

  81. فما ذل مخفور وأنت خفيره

    فكم منع الراشي عن القانص الأدوى

    So what humiliation while You are its guard

    For how the well-water drawer prevented the container, the harm

  82. بصنعي انتعشني من سنية نائم

    وخذ بيدي مولاي عن هدف الشفوى

    With my doing revive me from my years dormant

    Take my hand, my Master, from misguided aims

  83. أجرني أجرني أجزنيأجر مدحتي

    وهبني دواء شافيا واسقني محوى

    Pull me, pull me, reward me, reward my praise

    And grant me a healing cure and give me erasure

  84. إذا لم يكن لي من خطيري ناعش

    فمن ذا أرجيه الشفيع الذي ينوي

    If I don’t have from my poem a lifeblood

    Then who do I hope for, the intercessor I intend?

  85. صلاة من الباري عليك ولم تزل

    تعم ضجيعيك الإمامين في التقوى

    A prayer from the Creator upon you, and you never ceased

    To cover your two Imams in piety

  86. هما في الحياة الناصراك وبعدما

    لقيت الردى قاما مقامك في الفتوى

    They in life are your supporters, and after

    You met demise, they took your place in juristic opinion

  87. حسامان في الأعدا وشمسان في الهدى

    زؤامان في الأواء خصمان في الحدوى

    Two swords against the enemies and two suns in guidance

    Two restraints against transgressors, two opponents in dispute

  88. هنيئاً هما جاراك دنيا وفي غد

    جزاؤهما يوم الجزا جنة المأوى

    Congratulations, they are your neighbors in life and tomorrow

    Their reward is Heaven on the Day of Requital
