1. Great are You; nothing besides You is great.

    And generous are You; no generous soul rivals You.

  2. And You brought known handiwork into being through a power

    that impoverishes the wealthy and grants bounty to the destitute.

  3. You are compassionate toward Your servants, a watchful guardian,

    and generous to the sinner who seeks refuge in You.

  4. Gentle are You; if You grant respite, You do not neglect.

    Bountiful are You; You have not withheld, and You are forbearing.

  5. Blessed are You in holiness, exalted in power,

    fully aware of the secrets of sins, all-knowing.

  6. I implored You in distress, and I call upon You in fear

    and hope; You are the One whose help is sought, the Sustainer.

  7. For my sin is great, O Great One; yet it is You who

    are great, and nothing is great before the Great One.

  8. May You have freed me with the noble freed ones,

    for I hesitate at the door of hope.

  9. Though I bear sin, guilty through having earned it,

    not everyone who hopes for Your approval is sinful.

  10. And I stood as the month of fasting bade me farewell;

    and everyone who joins a beloved must part.

  11. I bid it farewell, my eye expressing my gratitude through its tears,

    and I feared what follows it: that I would no longer fast.

  12. And if my happy fortune is already established with You, no

    oppressor will wrong me at the two stations.

  13. May You have accepted my fasting, while what remains

    of sin with me still pursues me and abides.

  14. Oh, would that I knew how to draw near to You—

    do I approach with ruinous sins, O Merciful One?

  15. I did not know whether this month bade farewell content;

    and what has departed from me is indeed my adversary.

  16. Men triumphed in the month of fasting; would that I

    might be joined to them on the day of triumph,

  17. and had given fasting its due as they did,

    and had done what al-Karmi used to do.

  18. Farewell, Abu Fitr; you have left our midst,

    while everyone remains in sincere affection.

  19. Through you, remembrance was recited in every mosque;

    through you, O month of fasting, the faith stands upright.

  20. Every tongue, in you, bears fruit in remembrance,

    and, through you, is barren of foul speech and disobedience.

  21. Through you, blessings gathered fully and came together;

    within you is the Night of Decree—would that it endured!

  22. You came, welcomed, with the All-Merciful's angels;

    light shone from them while the darkness was pitch-black.

  23. You departed, Abu Fitr, as a boon companion departs;

    can a boon companion find another in your stead?

  24. On our own behalf, we asked the One who bestowed you, our companion,

    that we might meet you, with great bounty as our companion.

  25. I saw our sins depart with the leave-taking,

    as dry brush is carried off amid the storm winds.

  26. So [the worst] life is one bound to sins,

    nor is any bliss sweet in the earning of sin.

  27. When I sleep, fragments of transgressions visit me;

    so I sit down and rise because of their [fetters].

  28. And among the strangest things about me is when trial comes:

    my affliction through sin—how, while he sleeps so much? [Wording unclear.]

  29. Were it not for hope in God—that His kindness

    embraces every creature who hopes in Him—

  30. I would break my breaths with groan after groan,

    with a shattering deep among the folds of my ribs.

  31. But I seek protection in the One through whom

    the bone sprang to life, though it lay crumbled there.

  32. I am love-distraught, yearning for pardon and approval,

    and every lover is an unreasoning beast before the beloved.

  33. I sent my hopes to You, hoping they would take their first draught,

    and they wander yearningly toward acceptance's watering place.

  34. If You pardon me, it is a gracious gift from You;

    for I am ever asking, and the One asked is generous.

  35. May God bless the Chosen One and his family,

    whenever high-humped camels head toward the sacred sites.
