1. I yearn for Layla, and Layla is my heart’s desire.

    With the yearning of camels awaiting their fifth-day drink, or a she-camel anxious over her male calf.

  2. And who could blame me if my heart melts with longing

    For Layla? It is fitting that my mind should melt for her.

  3. I loved her as a child, an old man, and a youth,

    And lived lovesick for her—what a lovesick lover!

  4. And enough for me is the burning sorrow and longing within me

    For Layla; my passion for her is enough for me—enough.

  5. And who will tell the Hijazi caravan, for me, that I

    Am a brother to burning longing that bows toward that caravan?

  6. I say to my companions: ‘Turn right with me toward the sanctuary,

    And turn aside with us at Wadi al-Atiq, my companions.’

  7. They tell me: ‘Noble Layla—between her

    And you lies the distance between the riding-camels on al-Ghabi;

  8. Yet you hope for union with her, while barring that union

    Lie vast desert plains, added to yet more plains.’

  9. So I told them that I turn to God in hope,

    And ask Him for access to those veils.
