1. Contentment with what God, the Wise, has decreed—contentment.

    Who can turn back God's decree once He has decreed?

  2. His will and His power have taken effect among us;

    thus all that is to come into being is already settled within it.

  3. This one is blessed and will not be wretched; that one has not

    found bliss, being wretched; His judgment is binding upon us.

  4. How long shall we remain in this world and its finery,

    never abandoning pride and hatred within it?

  5. We pass our evenings and mornings with hopes that have toyed with us,

    until we forgot the meeting with God and wasting away.

  6. We love to amass what perishes, and remember what

    endures when we encounter sorrow and wasting illness.

  7. Woe to such heedlessness! Its victim never awakens

    except when his eye closes at death.

  8. My Master, my sin is immense; were it borne by

    Aja and Salma, their parts would complain of one another.

  9. Fear is with me, yet beside it is a hope

    that leaps toward worldly greed whenever it appears.

  10. God, multiply my love for You, as I seek

    Your pleasure with me; and make worldly goods hateful to me.

  11. If You answer my prayer, I shall gain what

    I desire, and attain my wishes, my aims, and my goal.

  12. I call upon You with the plea of one in distress who calls upon You with

    good hope in You, seeking recompense and trembling.

  13. O Hearer of the prayers of those who return to Him,

    hear my prayer and grant me Your gracious favor.

  14. To You I have turned in repentance; my back is bowed by a sin

    I have borne; were it to attempt to rise, it could not rise.

  15. May there be kindness, a veiling pardon, and favor,

    and a share of bounty, and purification that shines and gleams;

  16. and may You reunite us tomorrow in the abode of bliss—

    me and my child gone before me, who was taken yesterday.

  17. God has compensated me for him with reward for a child gone before;

    for reward, through you, is better recompense than my child gone before me.

  18. How happy my lot when I meet him with you

    tomorrow in the Garden of Eden, with grave peril cast off!

  19. There you will complain of no sorrow, nor weariness,

    nor of time's grinding or biting;

  20. nor will you dread any whispering from Iblis,

    nor fear separation—no, nor illness—

  21. as a neighbor of al-Mustafa, the Chosen One, our master.

    May God bless him for as long as morning shines.
