1. I seek forgiveness of God, the Almighty,

    the Ruler, just in judgment,

  2. for all that I have left behind,

    in speech, deeds, and intention;

  3. and for the praises I composed in verse

    under the rule of tyrants,

  4. or commoners, or anyone

    who belonged among the base.

  5. They are people of ill omen and blameworthiness,

    and vile morals.

  6. I am repentant, returning to You

    for the wrong I have done; so turn toward him in mercy.

  7. And revive my little stock through guidance,

    away from every distraction and error.

  8. O voyagers on the sea of hopes,

    in the belly of the ship of death,

  9. do not neglect the rudder, or

    you will sail with a twofold wind.

  10. And tend to your wares, which

    contain pure merchandise [uncertain reading],

  11. so you may sell in the market of the Hereafter,

    when all creation gathers,

  12. at a standing-place where there has appeared

    throughout its breadth every affliction.

  13. There, the tyrants among kings

    are more abased than the poor among their subjects.

  14. Repent to God, to win the

    blessed, ample shares;

  15. with them you purchase, from the Garden of

    Firdaws, an exalted station.
