1. Bear your loss well, for patience is best amid anguish,

    When patience flows like bitter aloes amid anguish.

  2. Beware of grieving, for the sorrowful goes trailing along in

    A robe of humiliation, unfurled over panic.

  3. And entrust the matter to the Creator, [that He may recompense you] for what

    You have entrusted—with a reward, and recompense for death and pain.

  4. For no living being lasts forever, even if he lives an age;

    Just as he announced another's death, his own was announced among the transgressors.

  5. For one like you has grieved for no one,

    But yourself—so do not feel safe from being struck down.

  6. And beware a sudden, devastating onset of death;

    And beware your standing between terror and dread.

  7. For death is a bridge, and all will cross it;

    And the distinction is between the ignorant and the devout.

  8. Indeed, fortunate is he who meets calamities within

    An army of patience, valiant-hearted and composed.

  9. O Ahmad, O peerless one of the age, be a mountain,

    Solid against calamities, never split asunder.

  10. For your bedfellow is not unique in parting, nor

    Is this separation reckoned among unheard-of things.

  11. Take comfort, for this noblewoman has settled

    In an inviolable dwelling under God's protection,

  12. Amid a throng of the choicest houris, who serve her,

    And a gathered company of the Most Merciful's angels,

  13. Until you embrace her tomorrow in eternity,

    At the top of a lofty palace in Paradise.
