وَكُنتَ وَكُنّا وَالزَمانُ مُساعِدٌ

فَصِرتَ وَصِرنا وَهوَ غَيرُ مُساعِدِ

You were, and we were, and time was favorable

Then you became, and we became, yet time turned unfavorable

وَزاحَمَني في وِردِ ريقِكَ شارِبٌ

وَنَفسِيَ تَأبى شِركَها في المَوارِدِ

A rival jostled me for a sip from your lips

While my soul refuses to share you with others
