1. When some hearts are cut apart, severed too are

the bonds that guard love’s secret, and love is laid bare.

  2. Yet I made him bear it in his heart; never were severed

its bonds from him, though the heart itself was cut apart.

  3. Shall I solace him with a drink, when awe dwells within the soul?

And shall I offer him music, when love is attended by reproach?

  4. Sleepers savor the long duration of their sleep,

but love’s sleeplessness—if only they knew—is what is sweet.

  5. Then call to them in the mountain pass, out of slumber’s drowsiness:

    Hark, O sleepers—woe to you—awake!
