الدارُ أَخرَجَني الزَمانُ بِناظِري

فَغَلَبتُهُ فَدَخَلتُها بِالخاطِرِ

The house expelled me, time with my eyes,

So I overpowered it and entered it in my thoughts.

عَرَضَ الفِراقُ مَعارِضاً فيها وَما

فارَقتُ ما اِستَعرَضتُهُ بِضَمائِري

Separation displayed its goods therein but I did not

Abandon what I surveyed with my conscience.

عَجَباً لَهُ بِالأَمسِ كَيفَ أَزورُهُ

رَبعاً لَهُم وَاليَومَ أَصبَحَ زائِري

How wondrous yesterday he visited

As their neighbor and today he is my visitor!

لا تَشكُرِ الدُنيا لِأَوَّلِ حالَةٍ

مِنها فَإِنَّ الحُكمَ عِندَ الآخِرِ

Do not thank this life for the first

State of it, for judgment lies with the last.

وَالجالِبانِ الرِبحَ وَالخَسرانَ كَم

مَضَيا فَأَشكَلَ رابِحٌ بِالخاسِرِ

And the two, profit and loss, how often

Have they departed, so that the profit resembles loss!

لا تُنكِبَنَّ عَلى عِمارَتِها اِنطَوَت

ما يَسكُنُ الفاني فَلَيسَ بِعامِرِ

Do not persist in fortifying what will contain

That which dies, for it cannot endure.
